1. Heavyweights pulled the indices down

According to Mint, Bharti Airtel, ITC, L&T, Reliance and SBI did the most damage to the Sensex. Banking and IT have the biggest weights in both benchmarks, so selling there hurt. FMCG ended as the worst sector. Here’s why FMCG stocks fell today, and why IT stocks fell today.

2. The dollar stayed strong

Mint said the dollar index was trading near 102.5, its highest in 18 months. It’s up 1% so far in October, on top of a 2% gain in September. When the dollar is this firm, foreign money tends to drift towards US assets and away from places like India.

3. Foreign investors kept selling

NSDL data cited by Mint shows FPIs sold ₹44,166 crore of Indian shares in October up to Friday. Their net sales for 2026 so far add up to ₹3,04,468 crore. Geojit’s V K Vijayakumar told Mint the FPI selling is “rational” as long as the 10-year US bond yield stays above 5.2%. Our FII DII data report has more.

4. RBI steps helped the rupee

The rupee firmed up after the RBI announced a dollar window for oil companies and stricter forex hedging rules. Our RBI rupee measures explainer covers both. Religare Broking’s Ajit Mishra told Mint that with Brent crude in the $102-105 range, the relief on inflation was limited.

5. Retail inflation at a 23-month high

Data out after the close showed CPI inflation climbed to 5.54% in September from 4.83%, with food inflation at 7.74%, according to Business Standard. Full breakdown: retail inflation September 2026.

6. The broader market did better

Smallcaps went up even as the Sensex fell, and the Nifty Media index rose 4.6%. See smallcap stocks rise today and Nifty Media surges.

7. Stock stories of the day

What it means

Mint’s three factors, heavyweight selling, a strong dollar and FPI outflows, all pull in one direction. Right now, pressure from outside is beating domestic support. With inflation running hotter, the RBI’s next step and the Q2 numbers matter even more. Our stock market this week guide lays out what’s coming, and the Stock Market Today India hub gets updated daily.
