Smallcap stocks rise today while the benchmarks slide, and that split tells its own story. Why smaller stocks did better
Monday’s selling was focused on the big, foreign-held heavyweights. FMCG, PSU banks, IT and private banks took most of the hit. We covered the FMCG stocks and IT stocks slides separately.
When foreign investors trim India, large caps are what they sell. Smaller companies lean more on domestic money. HDFC Sky said the broader market was “supported by domestic fund inflows”. Rotation into media, auto and realty helped as well. Here’s how the Nifty Media index surged 4.6%.
What it means for investors
Smallcaps up on a day the Sensex falls is a sign that domestic buyers haven’t gone anywhere. With foreigners still selling, that’s a handy cushion.
Just remember smallcaps swing harder. A 20% single-day pop like Gallantt Ispat’s can unwind just as quickly. We’d stick to companies with clear news and solid fundamentals, and keep position sizes sensible. Our position sizing formula guide shows how.
