On a red Monday for Dalal Street, the Nifty Media index surges were hard to miss. The index closed 4.60% higher at 1,624.8 on October 12, 2026, according to Capital Market, while the Nifty 50 slipped 0.70% to 22,363.35.

Media wasn’t alone. Auto, realty and smallcaps also did better than the benchmarks, which tells you the selling was aimed at a handful of heavyweight sectors rather than the whole market.

Nifty Media index surges: the stocks behind it

Here are the top media gainers Capital Market listed:

  • Prime Focus: up 7.99%
  • Tips Music: up 7.21%
  • Nazara Technologies: up 7.16%

Zoom out and the index is up 6.00% over the past month and 4.00% over the past year. Compare that with the Nifty 50, which is down 11.56% over the same twelve months, per the same report.

We couldn’t find a single trigger for the rally in any of the reports we checked. Nifty Media is small and concentrated, so a few stocks having a good day can push it a long way in one session.

Auto and realty held up too

The HDFC Sky sector snapshot had these moves:

  • Nifty Realty up about 1%.
  • Nifty Auto up 0.9%.
  • Pharma a touch higher, up 0.3%.
  • The Nifty Smallcap index up 1.4%, with the Midcap index adding about 0.1%.

According to HDFC Sky, money coming in from domestic funds helped hold up the broader market.

So what pulled the benchmarks down?

The Sensex shed 547.65 points (0.76%) to 71,924.68. The damage came from big, heavily weighted sectors:

  • FMCG: Nifty FMCG lost 1.67% (Capital Market), with ITC and Hindustan Unilever among the worst Nifty performers.
  • PSU banks: Nifty PSU Bank was down 1.18%.
  • IT: Nifty IT dropped about 0.8%, dragged by a 2.8% fall in Tech Mahindra (HDFC Sky).
  • Banks: Nifty Bank slid 0.6% after the RBI’s new liquidity rules. Our explainer covers the RBI’s 99% daily CRR maintenance rule.
  • Hospitals: Apollo Hospitals fell 3.2%. Here’s why hospital stocks fell today.

HDFC Sky put it down to steady foreign selling, expensive crude and inflation worries.

What it means for investors

When the index falls but smallcaps, media and auto go up, that’s rotation, not panic. Money left the heavyweights foreign investors are dumping and moved into more domestic-facing corners.

Don’t read too much into it, though. A 4.6% jump in a small sectoral index won’t change the bigger trend, and the Nifty 50 is still well down over the year. The real test is whether media and smallcaps keep these gains if FII selling carries on.
