Stock market closing October 15: where the indices ended

  • Sensex: 74,315.61, up 1,533.72 points (+2.11%).
  • Nifty 50: 22,997.35, up 374.65 points (+1.66%) from the previous close of 22,622.70. NSE data show 41 Nifty stocks up, 8 down and 1 unchanged.
  • Nifty Bank: 55,810.50, up 0.89%.
  • India VIX: 13.96, down 4.58%, meaning traders expected a calmer few days.
  • Nifty Midcap 100: down 0.36%; Nifty Smallcap 100: down 1.31%.

Business Standard said the Nifty’s gain was its largest since June 12, and the index closed close to its intraday high of 23,056.40.

What drove the buying

Oddly, this happened on a day when tech shares were getting hammered across Asia. Reuters, via Business Recorder, put that sell-off down to doubts over returns from the global AI spending boom after sticky US inflation data. Analysts quoted by BusinessLine argued the global tech rout actually made India look relatively more attractive. Reuters also noted that foreign investors have taken a record $32.7 billion out of Indian equities this year.

Cheaper oil helped. India Today reported Brent crude down 2.06% at $103.87 a barrel. The rupee rose for a fifth session in a row and ended near 95.05 to the US dollar, according to BusinessLine, and softer bond yields were mentioned as another support.

The Sensex and Nifty rallied hard, but the gains were concentrated in a few large stocks while most of the market ended lower.

Which sectors and stocks did the lifting

NSE sectoral data show where the money went:

  • Gainers: Nifty Private Bank +1.89%, Nifty IT +1.82%, Nifty Auto +1.67% and Nifty Oil & Gas +1.41%.
  • Losers: Nifty PSU Bank −1.55%, Nifty Media −1.47% and Nifty FMCG −1.06%.

Reliance Industries added the most to the Nifty’s gain, rising 3.44% to ₹1,215 after filing the red herring prospectus for the Jio Platforms IPO, which opens on October 21, Business Standard reported. Bharti Airtel gained 3.31% to ₹1,854. India Today had Tech Mahindra as the top Sensex gainer, with ICICI Bank next. Reuters said the IT index has climbed about 8.4% over three sessions on strong earnings from TCS and HCLTech.

IDBI Bank went the other way, falling about 8% after the Cabinet cleared a ₹52,878-crore stake sale to Fairfax at a discount, BusinessLine reported. AI-linked names took a hit too, with Reuters reporting that Sterlite Technologies, HFCL and MTAR Technologies all fell by their 5% limits.

Most stocks didn’t join in

Under the headline, breadth was poor. Business Standard reported that falling shares on the NSE outnumbered rising ones 1,755 to 898. Overall investor wealth went up just ₹47,634 crore, while Nifty 50 stocks on their own added ₹2.61 trillion. We look at that gap in Nifty Midcap and Smallcap October 15.

Flows pulled in different directions. Provisional NSE FII/DII data show foreign investors sold a net ₹5,285.37 crore in the cash market, while domestic institutions bought a net ₹3,319.39 crore. The detail is in our FII DII data for October 15.

Looking ahead to Friday

The Nifty is now right at the 23,000 mark, but a handful of big stocks got it there. BusinessLine cited near-term Nifty support at 22,950–22,900 and then 22,750, with resistance at 23,050–23,150. For the Sensex, it put support at 74,100–73,900 and resistance at 74,600–74,900. Big bank results over the weekend, crude and foreign flows will probably decide whether more stocks join the move. Our Nifty outlook for October 16 has the levels traders are watching.
