The Nifty Midcap and Smallcap on October 15 went one way while the headline indices went the other. The Nifty 50 jumped 1.66% to 22,997.35 on Thursday, but the Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.36% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 dropped 1.31%, as per NSE index data at the 3:30 pm close. A handful of heavyweights took most of the buying, and most stocks outside the top 50 closed in the red. The rest of the session is in our stock market today India hub.

Nifty Midcap and Smallcap on October 15: the closing numbers
The NSE data for 15 October 2026 shows the gap getting wider the further down the market-cap ladder you go:
- Nifty 50: 22,997.35, up 374.65 points (+1.66%), with 41 constituents rising, 8 falling and 1 unchanged.
- Nifty Next 50: 68,671.60, down 0.47%.
- Nifty Midcap 100: 59,197.25, down 211.85 points (−0.36%), with 40 gainers and 59 decliners.

- Nifty Smallcap 250: 17,627.05 (−1.15%); Nifty Microcap 250: 25,554.75 (−1.65%).
- Nifty 500: up 0.65%, but with 203 advances and 293 declines among its members.
On our maths, the Smallcap 100 lagged the Nifty 50 by about 2.97 percentage points on the day. The Upstox market report had the same closing levels for both broader indices.
A few largecaps did all the work
Business Standard called it the Nifty’s biggest gain since June 12, and a narrow one: on the NSE, declining shares beat advancing ones 1,755 to 898. Overall investor wealth rose ₹47,634 crore even though Nifty 50 stocks added ₹2.61 trillion, which, the paper said, means stocks outside the index lost about ₹2.1 trillion. Gaurav Sharma, head of research at Globe Capital, told the paper that “only a handful of largecap stocks led this up move.”
IT, private banks and Reliance Industries provided the lift. BusinessLine had Tech Mahindra up 4.75%, ICICI Bank up 3.80% and Bharti Airtel up 3.98%, with the Sensex up 2.11% at 74,315.61.
Where midcaps and smallcaps got hurt
Bank-specific news did the most damage to the broader indices. Upstox said Yes Bank was the Midcap 100’s biggest loser, down 14.53% after the Supreme Court upheld the Bombay High Court order cancelling the write-off of about ₹8,415 crore of its AT-1 bonds. BHEL (−6.41%), GE Vernova T&D India (−5.75%) and Apar Industries (−5.58%) were also down. In the Smallcap 100, IDBI Bank fell 8.1% after the government approved the sale of a 60.72% stake to Fairfax Financial; BusinessLine said the deal values the shares at ₹81 each, well under the previous close.
Not everything fell. Tata Communications topped the Midcap 100 with a 5.47% rise after posting consolidated Q2 FY27 net profit of ₹341 crore, up 86% from ₹183 crore a year earlier, according to Upstox. Gallantt Ispat gained 8.9% in the Smallcap 100.
Reading a rally this narrow
When the Nifty rises and the midcap and smallcap indices fall, money is rotating into large, liquid names rather than coming in across the board. We saw the same pattern in our midcap vs Nifty divergence analysis. On the same day, foreign investors were net sellers of ₹5,285.37 crore, according to NSE provisional data, which we covered in FII DII data for October 15.
Even after Thursday’s fall, the broader indices are closer to their 52-week highs than the benchmark is. By our calculation from NSE data, the Smallcap 100 closed about 5.2% under its 52-week high of 20,187.80 and the Midcap 100 about 8.2% under 64,450.90, while the Nifty 50 is about 12.8% below 26,373.20. Over the next few sessions, as the Q2 results season continues, watch whether breadth gets better. A rally that stays stuck in a few heavyweights is more fragile than one that spreads.
