The idbi bank fairfax stake sale october 2026 went from Cabinet nod to sharp sell-off in two sessions. On October 14, 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings’ acquisition vehicle as the strategic buyer of a controlling stake in IDBI Bank. A day later, on October 15, the stock closed 7.68% below its previous NSE close. Blame profit-taking after Wednesday’s run-up and a deal price below the market. Our Stock Market Today India hub covers the rest of the session.

IDBI Bank Fairfax stake sale October 2026: the terms the Cabinet signed off
The Press Information Bureau release dated October 14, 2026 says the CCEA approved M/s 10955230 Canada Inc., whose parent is Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., as the strategic buyer, for a purchase consideration of ₹52,878.0806181 crore for a 60.72% stake. Of that, 30.48% comes from the Government of India and 30.24% from LIC. Once the sale goes through, the government keeps 15% and LIC 19%. Fairfax’s winning best-offer bid was ₹81 per share. That is above the ₹75.99 per share average fair valuation worked out by two independent agencies, which served as the benchmark. PIB also said the transaction, when completed, would be the largest foreign direct investment in India’s financial sector to date. It still needs the buyer to clear RBI’s fit-and-proper process and meet other regulatory conditions.
Per the same release, the Preliminary Information Memorandum inviting expressions of interest was issued on October 7, 2022. Bids in financial year 2025-26 came in below the reserve price of ₹94.42 per share then in force and were not approved, so fresh best-offer bids were sought in 2026-27. Moneycontrol, quoting the DIPAM secretary, said the share purchase agreement should be signed before the end of 2026, Fairfax will face a three-year lock-in, and the IDBI brand will stay.
Why the shares lost about 7.7% on October 15
NSE’s CM bhavcopy for October 15, 2026, has IDBI closing at ₹83.45, down from ₹90.39 the previous day (−₹6.94, or −7.68%). The stock opened at its high of ₹89.86, slipped to a low of ₹82.50, and 7,26,96,329 shares traded. That is a close-to-close fall, not one measured from the open. The same bhavcopy series shows an October 14 close of ₹90.39 and a high of ₹93.60, up from ₹82.94 previously. That is roughly a 9% close-to-close gain, with the intraday high about 13% above the October 13 close. Measured against that October 14 close, the ₹81 deal price is a discount of about 10.4% (Moneycontrol put it at roughly 10.4% to Wednesday’s ₹90.40 close). Economic Times called Thursday’s fall profit-booking after the privatisation rally, while Moneycontrol pointed to the discount. Both fit the data: a big jump into the announcement, then a pullback towards, but still above, the approved bid.
Where this leaves IDBI going into October 16
What we actually know for Friday is the Cabinet-approved terms and Thursday’s NSE close. The privatisation itself isn’t done. RBI’s fit-and-proper clearance and the other regulatory steps in the PIB note are still pending. Pair it with our stock market closing October 15 wrap and the earlier PSU bank stocks October 15 note, which picked up the Fairfax decision before Thursday’s close. Until the share purchase agreement is signed and the clearances arrive, the ₹81 bid and the October 15 close are the two reference points the market is working off. Neither is a buy or sell signal.
