The list of 52 week high stocks today was a thin one on Monday, October 12, 2026. Upstox’s market wrap counted 76 NSE stocks at 52-week highs and 140 at one-year lows, on a day the Sensex lost 547.65 points and the Nifty 50 ended at 22,363.35.

Small and micro-caps supplied most of the new highs. That fits the day, because the broader market did better than the benchmarks.

52 week high stocks today: the market backdrop

These are the closing numbers Upstox reported for the session:

  • Sensex: 71,924.68, down 547.65 points (0.76%).
  • Nifty 50: 22,363.35, down 157.1 points (0.7%).
  • Nifty Smallcap 100: up 1.42% to 19,425.80.
  • Nifty Midcap 100: up 0.08% to 58,834.55.
  • India VIX: 15.24, up 5.98%.

Breadth was close to a dead heat. Of the 3,706 stocks that traded on the NSE, 1,795 went up, 1,798 went down and 113 didn’t move. Upstox also counted 124 stocks at upper circuit and 104 at lower circuit.

What dragged the indices? Upstox pointed to crude oil climbing past $105 per barrel and to weakness in banking and FMCG stocks. It also said FPIs had taken ₹44,166 crore out of Indian equities so far in October.

With almost twice as many new lows as new highs, Monday’s tape said the market is still repairing itself, even though small caps had a good day.

The recap also flagged a few names, CUPID and ONELIFECAP among them, that made new highs but were trading in the red for the day. That can be an early hint that buyers are running out of steam at those levels.

By the close the count had gone from 64 to 76, going by Upstox’s end-of-day number. Individual closing prices may not match the midday LTPs above.

What stands out

  • Jewellery names: UDAYJEW, KKJEWELS and SKYGOLD were all there. Quite a few jewellery-linked stocks showed up together.
  • Repeat highs: a lot of these stocks had made their previous high on October 7, 8 or 9. So this is momentum carrying over several sessions, not a one-day pop.
  • Circuit-limit moves: several gains sit at or near 5% or 20%, which are common circuit bands. A stock frozen at its circuit can be tough to buy or sell.

Why the previous-high dates matter

Check the “previous high” column in the table. When a stock’s last high was months back, like KKJEWELS (June 5) or MODIS (July 23), today’s move is breaking out of a longer sideways phase. When the last high was just a session or two ago, the stock is already deep in a short-term run and may be more stretched.

Where the large caps stood

None of the Nifty 50 heavyweights led the list. According to Upstox, 36 Nifty stocks closed lower and 13 closed higher.

The best performers in the Nifty were Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (+2.71%), Bajaj Auto (+2.62%), Tata Motors PV (+1.63%), Bharat Electronics (+1.56%) and BSE (+1.31%).

At the other end were Apollo Hospitals (−3.15%), ITC (−3.05%), Tech Mahindra (−2.85%), Larsen & Toubro (−2.05%) and Max Healthcare (−2.02%).

On the sector side, Upstox had only Nifty Media (+4.6%), Auto (+0.9%), Realty (+0.76%) and Pharma (+0.45%) in the green. FMCG (−1.67%) and PSU Bank (−1.18%) fell the most.

How to read a 52-week high list

A stock at a 52-week high is trading above every price it has seen in the past year. That’s useful information. It just isn’t the whole story.

Why traders watch new highs

  • No overhead supply: nobody bought recently at a higher price and is now waiting to get out at breakeven.
  • Momentum: stocks hitting new highs often come from sectors where earnings or news flow is getting better.
  • Relative strength: a new high on a day the Sensex dropped more than 500 points says demand was unusually strong.

Why caution is needed

  • Thin liquidity: plenty of names on today’s list are small or micro-caps. Wide spreads and low volumes can make prices jumpy.
  • Circuit locks: a stock stuck at its upper circuit can open lower the next morning if demand dries up.
  • Chasing risk: buying after a 20% jump in one day leaves very little room for mistakes.
  • Fundamentals: a new high tells you nothing about valuation. Look at earnings, debt and recent announcements before you buy.

A 52-week high is a starting point for research, not a buy signal. The best ones are backed by volume, earnings and a sector that’s moving too.

A simple checklist for screening new highs

  1. Volume: did the breakout come on above-average volume? Highs made on thin volume are less dependable.
  2. Close: did the stock finish near its high, or hand back most of the gain?
  3. Sector: are its peers strong too? A move across a sector usually lasts longer than one stock going it alone.
  4. Market cap and liquidity: can you get in and out at the size you want?
  5. News: is a result, an order win or a corporate action behind it? The exchange filings will tell you.
  6. Risk plan: where’s your stop-loss if the breakout fails? A close back under the previous high is a common reason to exit.

How a 52-week high is calculated

The 52-week high is the top price a stock has traded at over the previous 52 weeks, so roughly a year. Most data providers take the intraday high rather than closing prices. That’s how a stock can show a “new 52-week high” above where it ends up trading, as UDAYJEW did in the midday snapshot, with an LTP of Rs 217.00 against a new high of Rs 218.11.

Corporate actions matter as well. After a bonus issue, stock split or rights issue, older prices get adjusted so the 52-week number stays comparable. When your broker app and the exchange show different highs, a corporate action that hasn’t been adjusted is often why.

Three common ways traders use new-high lists

1. Breakout buying with confirmation

Some traders only buy once a stock closes above its previous 52-week high on strong volume, with a stop-loss just under the old high. The thinking is that the old high should now hold as support.

2. Pullback entries

Others stay away on the breakout day itself. They put the stock on a watchlist and wait for a quiet pullback towards the breakout level. If that level holds, the risk-reward is better.

3. Sector scanning

Investors also use the list to see which sectors are taking the lead. When several stocks from one industry turn up together, like the jewellery names today, the theme behind the move is often more worth studying than any single stock.

Whichever way you go, size your position according to the stock’s liquidity and volatility. Our guide to risk management in trading shows how to size trades so one failed breakout doesn’t do serious damage to your capital.

Highs vs lows: what the ratio tells you

Monday’s 76 new highs against 140 new lows works out to roughly 1 to 1.8. When lows outnumber highs like this, the broader market is usually still under pressure, even if some pockets look strong.

Track the ratio over a few days. New highs rising steadily while new lows fall would be one sign that things are getting better.

What to watch on Tuesday

  • Whether today’s 20% gainers hold on or open lower.
  • Crude oil, which Upstox put above $105 per barrel.
  • Foreign investor flows after a month of heavy selling in October.
  • The Q2 earnings calendar. Our Q2 results this week list has the dates.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see the full list of 52-week highs?

The NSE website puts out a daily list of securities at 52-week highs and lows, and most broker apps come with a 52-week high scanner.

Is it better to buy stocks at 52-week highs or lows?

Neither is better by default. Stocks at highs have momentum but can be stretched. Stocks at lows may be cheap, or may be falling for a good reason. Let your strategy and research make the call.

Why does the count differ between websites?

It depends on the time of day and on filters like market cap, series or minimum volume. Today the midday count was 64 and the end-of-day number was 76.
