The stock market week ahead from October 19, 2026 is a short one, and a busy one. Indian exchanges get only four trading sessions because markets are shut on Tuesday, October 20, for Dussehra. Meanwhile the earnings calendar is crowded, and it opens with the big private banks reporting over the weekend. For daily levels and updates, keep our stock market today India hub handy.

Where the Nifty and Sensex left off

The Nifty 50 closed Friday, October 16, at 23,146.15, up 148.80 points or 0.65% on the day, as per NSE’s index closing data. Compared with the previous Friday’s close of 22,520.45, that works out to a weekly gain of 625.70 points, or about 2.78%. The Sensex finished Friday at 74,729.27, up 0.56%. Mint called it the benchmarks’ best week since the week ended April 10.

Look under the hood, though, and the gains were narrow. The same NSE data shows the Nifty IT index jumping about 11.72% over the week to 31,924.10. The Nifty Midcap 100 managed only about 0.58%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 actually slipped about 0.12%. Mint put the move down to a sharp IT rally and a firmer rupee. Foreign investors kept selling, though, and crude oil above $100 a barrel is still hanging over corporate earnings. Friday’s details are in our October 16 closing report.

Dussehra break on October 20

NSE’s trading holiday list for 2026 marks October 20 as a Dussehra holiday. So equity trading runs on Monday, October 19, and then from Wednesday, October 21, to Friday, October 23. Short weeks often bring thinner volumes around the break. And anyone carrying positions over the holiday takes on the risk of news landing while markets are closed.

Stock market week ahead: the Q2 results line-up

Banks go first. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDBI Bank and Yes Bank have all informed BSE that their boards meet on Saturday, October 17, to approve September-quarter results, as shown in Business Standard’s results calendar. Those numbers are what Dalal Street reacts to on Monday morning. For the rest of the week, here is the schedule according to Capital Market, whose dates line up with the board meeting notices listed by Business Standard:

  • Monday, October 19: Bajaj Finance.
  • Wednesday, October 21: Eternal.
  • Thursday, October 22: Swiggy.
  • Friday, October 23: Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Infosys and Tata Motors.

Mint noted that the focus now shifts to bank earnings and what managements say, especially at HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. Capital Market’s checklist is longer: bank asset quality, credit growth and margins, consumer finance demand, technology spending, pharma performance and the auto outlook.

Data and overseas cues

On the data front, Capital Market lists India’s infrastructure output for September on Wednesday, October 21, and the HSBC flash PMI readings for October on Friday, October 23. The RBI’s weekly foreign exchange reserves numbers, for the week ended October 16, also come out on Friday; our latest forex reserves report covers the week before. Abroad, China’s third-quarter GDP and September activity data are due on Monday. Beyond that, the usual suspects still matter: crude oil, foreign investor flows, the rupee and US Treasury yields.

Our read

Last week’s rally was carried by a handful of large stocks, mostly IT, while midcaps and smallcaps hardly moved. Whether it holds now comes down to earnings. If the banks deliver strong numbers over the weekend, the rally could broaden out. Weak margins or shaky asset quality would put it to the test. Our guide on how to analyse quarterly results of a company walks through what to look for in these reports.
