How the Sensex Nifty midday range formed

Nothing much happened at the bell. The Sensex opened at 73,049.76 against Tuesday’s close of 73,033.78 and swung between 72,894.41 and 73,178.98 in early deals, India Today reported. The Nifty opened at 22,715.75, and by 11:12 AM it had traded between 22,663.80 and 22,757.95 (NSE). Both indices dipped in the opening minutes, then clawed back as buyers stepped into IT stocks and HDFC Bank. At one point the Sensex touched 73,195.26, according to a PTI report.

A breather was always likely. On October 13 the Sensex shot up 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to 73,033.78, and the Nifty gained 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to 22,721.95 (PTI). What drove that move is covered in our recap of the October 13 Sensex rally.

IT and FMCG up, pharma and financials down

IT was in front again. The Nifty IT index stood 1.29% higher at 30,214.25 at 11:12 AM, having hit 30,377.15 earlier (NSE). That made it two up days in a row, as Upstox noted. Business Standard said TCS, Infosys and LTM were the best performers inside the IT index. Nifty FMCG was up 0.95% as well (NSE).

Pharma went the other way. The Nifty Pharma index was down 0.90%, and 17 of its 20 stocks were in the red. The Nifty PSU Bank index slipped 0.77% and Nifty Financial Services lost 0.51%, though the Nifty Bank index was nearly unchanged, down 0.03% (all NSE, 11:12 AM). Business Standard named Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finance and BSE as the biggest Nifty 50 losers at 11 AM. The broader market sat close to flat, with the Nifty Midcap 100 up 0.06% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 up 0.13%. India VIX, the volatility gauge, rose 1.59% to 14.35 (NSE).

Stocks moving on Q2 results

The sharpest single-stock moves came from results. Transformers & Rectifiers surged 15.7% to ₹351.66 on NSE after its September-quarter numbers. SS Retail gained as much as 13.7% to ₹786.80 after posting a 60.4% year-on-year jump in Q2 net profit to ₹23.9 crore. Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers dropped as much as 5.8% to ₹512.02 as its EBITDA margin narrowed by 423 basis points in the quarter. Bharat Coking Coal climbed 7% to ₹33.48 after announcing a price hike (all Business Standard).

Crude, FII flows and today’s results list

Brent crude was 0.62% higher at $106.4 a barrel (PTI). Foreign investors (FIIs/FPIs) sold a net ₹1,305.13 crore on October 13, while domestic institutions (DIIs) bought a net ₹2,439.24 crore, per NSE’s provisional data; our FII DII data for October 13 post has the breakdown. Geojit’s V K Vijayakumar told India Today that part of Tuesday’s rally was short-covering. He flagged a US 10-year yield near 5.2% and Brent near $106 as headwinds, but said financials, telecom, metals and autos could hold firm on hopes of a strong Q2 earnings season.

Companies due to report today include BHEL, Canara Bank, MRPL, ICICI Lombard General Insurance, HDB Financial Services, Tata Technologies, Ceat, Leela Palaces Hotels & Resorts and Groww parent Billionbrains Garage Ventures (Business Standard). On levels, HDFC Securities’ Vinay Rajani has suggested buying the Nifty on dips, with support at 22,580 and then 22,300.

Reading a flat morning after a 1.6% jump

This looks like consolidation, not a reversal. Money is moving around inside the index, into IT and FMCG and out of pharma and financials, but it isn’t leaving the market. For the afternoon, we’d watch Brent, still above $106, and the results that land after market hours, particularly from the state-run pair of BHEL and Canara Bank.
