Rupee vs Dollar Today and the Stock Market Impact

A firmer currency did nothing for stocks. The Sensex lost 547.65 points (0.76%) to end at 71,924.68, and the Nifty 50 shed 157.10 points (0.70%) to 22,363.35.

The indices did open higher, helped by easing crude and a recovering rupee. That mood didn’t survive once selling hit IT, FMCG and banking names. Our October 12 market wrap has the full session.

The RBI’s Package

Across October 9 and 10, the RBI rolled out a set of steps to steady the currency. The Economic Times listed the main ones:

  • A dollar window for oil companies: from October 12, Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL can buy dollars straight from the RBI rather than in the spot market.
  • Foreign Exchange Risk Reserve: for every rupee-linked FX derivative contract above $2 million, banks have to park a cash reserve with the RBI worth 20% of its rupee value.
  • Stricter hedging rules: derivative deals without proof of exposure are now capped at $5 million, down from $100 million, and cancelled contracts can no longer be rebooked.
  • A daily CRR floor: from October 16, banks must maintain 99% of their required CRR every single day, against 90% earlier.

Why the Oil Window Is the Big One

Oil marketing companies are some of the biggest dollar buyers in the country. Every time they buy in the open market, the rupee feels it.

Send that demand to the RBI instead and a large, steady buyer disappears from the spot market. The central bank has opened this kind of facility before when the currency was under stress.

The Bigger Picture: A Rough 2026 for the Rupee

Even so, the rupee is down 6.6% against the dollar this year, according to ET. Oil is a large part of that story. Brent was at about $106 a barrel on Monday, per CNBC-TV18’s market live blog.

ET quoted Kotak Mahindra Bank as saying a move in USD/INR below 95 “cannot be ruled out” in the near term. Societe Generale was more measured, saying crude, portfolio flows and the dollar will still shape where the rupee goes. In the end, oil prices, foreign portfolio flows and export receipts decide dollar demand and supply.

Who Gains and Who Loses Among Listed Companies

A stronger rupee cuts both ways:

  • Importers and oil-linked businesses like airlines and paint makers usually gain when the rupee firms, because their dollar costs come down. Monday was different. Rising crude won out, and IndiGo and Asian Paints slipped nearly 1%.
  • Exporters, IT in particular, earn in dollars, so a firmer rupee shrinks their rupee revenue. IT stocks were among the day’s laggards.
  • Banks have to deal with tighter liquidity because of the CRR change. The Bank Nifty fell 339 points to 54,918.

For foreign investors, a steadier rupee means smaller currency losses on Indian holdings. If that stability holds, it could help FII flows over time.
