Reliance Industries Jio Platforms RHP filing: why the stock moved

RIL informed BSE and NSE on October 14 that its subsidiary Jio Platforms Limited had filed the Red Herring Prospectus with the Registrar of Companies, Gujarat at Ahmedabad. The issue is a fresh one of up to 27 crore equity shares, ₹10 face value each. A price-band filing on ril.com the same day said the IPO Committee had fixed the floor at ₹1,065 and the cap at ₹1,119 a share, with a ₹54 discount for employees and a minimum bid of 12 shares. SEBI put the RHP on its public-issue filings list on October 15.

The calendar, from RIL’s October 14 RHP intimation to NSE: anchor bidding on Monday, October 19, the issue opening Wednesday, October 21 and closing Friday, October 23. The same filing sets aside equity worth not more than ₹500 crore for eligible employees and not more than ₹2,500 crore for eligible RIL public shareholders (individuals and HUFs) as of the RHP date. Do the maths and 27 crore shares at the ₹1,119 cap come to about ₹30,213 crore, or about ₹28,755 crore at the floor. That’s our arithmetic from the filings, and it lines up with Hindu Business Line and Livemint.

How Thursday’s tape looked

  • RIL: NSE close ₹1,215 (high ₹1,218.80, low ₹1,177.20) against a previous close of ₹1,174.60, a 3.44% gain (NSE bhavcopy).
  • Nifty 50: up 374.65 points, or 1.66%, at 22,997.35, its best one-day percentage gain since June 12; intraday high 23,056.40 (Business Standard).
  • Sensex: ended 2.11% higher at 74,315.61 (Business Standard; India Today has the gain at 1,533.72 points to the same close).
  • Bharti Airtel: closed at ₹1,854, up 3.31% from ₹1,794.60 (NSE bhavcopy; Business Standard shows the same close).
  • Breadth: on the NSE, 1,755 shares fell and 898 rose, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 lost 1.15% while the Nifty climbed (Business Standard). We looked at that gap in Nifty largecap vs smallcap divergence on October 15.

Why RIL holders cared about a subsidiary’s prospectus

Jio Platforms is raising money only through fresh shares. No existing shareholder is selling, so the cash goes to the company, and Hindu Business Line contrasts that with the OFS-heavy mega issues of Hyundai Motor India and LIC. Livemint reports that up to ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds is meant for repaying borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, and that RIL owns 66.43% of Jio Platforms. We’ve kept the lot sizes and reservation maths in our Jio Platforms IPO price band guide; this piece sticks to how the parent stock reacted the day after. Business Standard quoted Kranthi Bathini of WealthMills tying the buying in RIL to the Jio IPO news, coming after the stock’s recent 52-week low. Treat that as one brokerage’s read, not a forecast.

What it means for Reliance Industries shareholders

Thursday was about valuation and mood, not allotment. Once Jio lists, the market gets a direct price on the digital and telecom business sitting inside the group. In the near term we’d watch three things: whether RIL can hold the October 15 close through the October 19–23 bidding window, how the issue gets subscribed, and whether this largecap-led Nifty bounce spreads further down the market.
