RailTel Q2 results came out on a Sunday, and they tell two different stories at once. The state-owned railway telecom and IT company grew revenue from operations by 20.5% year on year to ₹1,146.14 crore for the September quarter, yet its net profit slipped 9.9% to ₹68.56 crore from ₹76.07 crore a year earlier, according to the results filed with BSE after the board met on October 25, 2026.
RailTel Q2 results: the key numbers
All figures below are from the filing and compare the quarter ended September 30, 2026 with the same quarter of 2025, unless we say otherwise.
- Revenue from operations: ₹1,146.14 crore, up 20.5% from ₹951.36 crore. Against the June quarter’s ₹893.27 crore, that’s a 28.3% jump.
- Total income: ₹1,149.06 crore versus ₹965.74 crore. Other income shrank to ₹2.92 crore from ₹14.38 crore.
- Profit before exceptional items and tax: ₹124.47 crore, only 2.5% higher than ₹121.43 crore.
- Exceptional items: ₹32.17 crore, double the ₹16.13 crore charged a year ago and well above ₹7.04 crore in the June quarter.
- Net profit: ₹68.56 crore, down 9.9% year on year but 4.2% higher than ₹65.78 crore in the June quarter.
- EPS: ₹2.14 against ₹2.37.
The board also declared an interim dividend of ₹1 a share, which is 10% on the ₹10 face value. The record date is Friday, October 30, and payment is due on November 20, 2026.
Where the growth came from, and where it leaked
Almost all of the top-line growth came from project work services. Segment revenue there rose 28.3% to ₹749.20 crore from ₹583.83 crore, and it now makes up roughly 65% of revenue, as ETInfra also noted. The telecom services segment grew a slower 8% to ₹396.94 crore.
The catch is margin. The filing shows the telecom segment earned a segment result (profit before tax and interest) of ₹112.28 crore on that ₹396.94 crore of revenue, roughly 28%. Project work brought in nearly twice the revenue but a segment result of only ₹27.08 crore, about 3.6%. Project expenses alone climbed to ₹722.12 crore from ₹560.93 crore. So the faster RailTel grows its project book, the thinner its overall margin gets. Keep that in mind the next time RailTel announces one of its order wins: a large contract value doesn’t translate into profit at the same rate.
Then there’s the exceptional line. The filing does not explain the ₹32.17 crore charge in the results table, and the ₹16.04 crore increase in that charge over last year more than explains the ₹13 crore fall in profit before tax, which came in at ₹92.30 crore against ₹105.30 crore.
What this means for shareholders
Strip out the exceptional charge and the operating business held steady rather than slipping. For the half year, net profit was ₹134.34 crore against ₹142.17 crore, down about 5.5%. The questions for Monday’s trade are simple: does the market look through a charge that also showed up a year ago and in the June quarter, and will management say more about what it is? Watch the stock’s reaction alongside the other names on our Q2 results calendar for this week.
Profit margin, measured as net profit over total income, fell to about 6% from 7.9% a year ago. For a company whose revenue mix keeps shifting toward low-margin project work, that number deserves more attention than the revenue headline.
