The most valued firms on Dalal Street had a big week. The combined market cap of nine of India’s ten most valued firms rose by ₹3.65 lakh crore in the week that ended on Friday, October 16, according to PTI’s weekly tally published by BusinessLine. TCS added the most, and Larsen & Toubro was the only one of the ten to lose value.
That fits the index picture. Over the week the BSE Sensex gained 2,256.94 points, or 3.11%, to close at 74,729.27, and the Nifty 50 rose 625.7 points, or 2.77%, to 23,146.15, as Moneycontrol’s weekly wrap shows. The Nifty IT index did most of the lifting, jumping 11.7% for its biggest weekly gain in 18 years after September-quarter earnings came in better than expected.

Most valued firms: who added what in market cap
Here is how the week went for each of the ten, using PTI’s figures. All amounts are changes in market capitalisation over the week, with the Friday close value alongside.
- TCS: up ₹1,08,542.63 crore to ₹8,91,134.96 crore
- Bharti Airtel: up ₹61,406.53 crore to ₹11,88,815.45 crore
- Infosys: up ₹55,893.05 crore to ₹4,71,409.41 crore
- Reliance Industries: up ₹53,047.56 crore to ₹16,37,437.19 crore
- HDFC Bank: up ₹32,379.05 crore to ₹11,22,628.07 crore
- ICICI Bank: up ₹30,769.95 crore to ₹10,02,871.44 crore
- Bajaj Finance: up ₹14,786.65 crore to ₹6,11,326.72 crore
- LIC: up ₹4,933.5 crore to ₹5,02,204.82 crore
- State Bank of India: up ₹3,323.07 crore to ₹8,87,722.84 crore
- Larsen & Toubro: down ₹9,232.26 crore to ₹4,99,725.06 crore
Add up the nine gainers and you get roughly ₹3,65,082 crore, which squares with the headline number.
The IT trade did the heavy lifting
The two IT names on the list tell the story. By our own maths from the PTI numbers, TCS’s market value rose about 13.9% in five sessions and Infosys’s about 13.5%. Those are huge moves for companies this size. Bharti Airtel’s ₹61,406.53 crore gain, by comparison, works out to about 5.4% of its starting value.
There’s a close race inside the table too. TCS finished the week at ₹8,91,134.96 crore, just ahead of SBI at ₹8,87,722.84 crore, a gap of only about ₹3,400 crore. That’s why TCS sits fifth and SBI sixth in PTI’s ranking, and one decent session for either stock could swap them. Lower down, L&T’s fall left it just under the ₹5 lakh crore mark, with LIC barely above it.
The full ranking at the end of the week, per PTI: Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, TCS, SBI, Bajaj Finance, LIC, L&T and Infosys.
Large caps ran, the rest walked
We’d be careful reading this as a broad rally. Moneycontrol’s numbers show the Nifty Midcap 100 rose only about 0.6% over the same week, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped about 0.1%. The money went into a handful of heavyweights, mainly IT, and the headline indices followed them up.
Foreign portfolio investors weren’t the ones chasing it either; they have been net sellers this month, as we laid out in our post on the FPI outflow in October 2026.
What to watch on Monday
Banks hold three of these ten spots, so the Saturday results matter. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank both reported on October 17; our quick reads of the HDFC Bank Q2 results and the ICICI Bank Q2 results cover the key lines. How the market prices those numbers on Monday, October 19, will decide whether the banks join the IT names at the top of next week’s list, or whether the IT rally takes a breather.
