A jumpy week for the fear gauge
India VIX has been lurching up and down day after day. Here is what Upstox data shows:
- October 6: 13.61 (-7.92%)
- October 7: 13.89 (+2.06%)
- October 8: 15.28 (+10.01%)
- October 9: 14.38 (-5.89%)
- October 12: 15.25 (+6.05%)
Swings this big in the fear gauge tell us traders are repricing risk fast, every time fresh news on crude oil, the rupee or FII flows lands.
Why volatility rose today
The Sensex opened more than 400 points up, then slid as much as 796 points, ET Now said. A reversal like that sends traders looking for Nifty options as protection, and that demand pushes VIX higher.
The reasons were the same ones dragging on stocks:
- Higher bond yields and steady foreign selling (Moneycontrol).
- Brent crude above $100 a barrel. More on the crude oil impact on the Indian stock market.
- Nerves ahead of the inflation data. CPI later came in at a 23-month high. See retail inflation September 2026.
How to read India VIX
NSE builds India VIX from Nifty option prices. It reflects the volatility the market expects over the next 30 days, shown as an annualised percentage. It tells you how big the moves might be, not which way they’ll go.
Illustrative calculation: a VIX of 15.25 implies an annualised move of about 15%. Divide that by the square root of roughly 252 trading days and you get an implied daily move of about 0.96%. On a Nifty of 22,363, that’s roughly ±215 points a day. Treat it as a rule of thumb, not a forecast.
What it means for traders
- Option premiums go up when VIX rises. That suits option sellers and makes buying options costlier. Our guide to options trading for beginners explains why.
- Stops may need more room. Bigger daily swings can knock out tight stop losses. Cut your position size instead of raising your risk. See stop loss in trading.
- A VIX around 15 is still moderate next to its 52-week high of 28.91. This is caution, not panic.
