On Monday, October 12, the Sensex shed 547.65 points to close at 71,924.68, and the Nifty dropped 157.10 points to 22,363.35, Upstox reported. India VIX jumped as much as 8.1% intraday. FMCG and PSU bank stocks did most of the damage, though smallcaps actually ended higher.

What could swing the open

  • Crude oil: Brent has climbed 2% to above $106. A jump like that is bad news for India’s inflation and for the rupee.
  • The rupee: it has firmed up to about 95.77 after the RBI’s new measures. Our RBI rupee measures explainer walks through them.
  • Inflation and earnings: India’s inflation print and this week’s Q2 results. The full calendar is in our stock market this week guide.

How to read GIFT Nifty

GIFT Nifty is a Nifty 50 futures contract traded on NSE International Exchange in GIFT City. It keeps trading while Indian markets are shut, so traders watch it for an early hint of where the Nifty might open. Treat it as a hint, not a promise. The real open depends on overnight news and pre-open orders, and a flat reading can easily turn into a gap if the news shifts late in the evening.
