FII DII data October 16 showed institutional flows flipping on Friday. Provisional exchange numbers have foreign institutional / portfolio investors (FII/FPI) buying a net ₹1,165.92 crore in the cash market, their first net purchase this October. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) went the other way, selling a net ₹3,661.28 crore. The DII selling was bigger, so combined institutional flows stayed negative. Even so, the Sensex and Nifty ended the day higher. Our stock market today India hub has the wider session picture.

FII DII data October 16: what each side bought and sold

Here’s how the NSE FII/FPI and DII capital-market report for 16 October 2026 breaks it down (provisional, subject to revision):

  • FII/FPI: purchases of ₹19,951.59 crore against sales of ₹18,785.67 crore, a net buy of ₹1,165.92 crore.
  • DII: purchases of ₹17,201.80 crore against sales of ₹20,863.08 crore, a net sell of ₹3,661.28 crore.
  • Combined net: −₹2,495.36 crore. On our maths, DII net selling was just over three times the FII net buying.

CNBC-TV18 carried the same buy, sell and net figures. Compare that with Thursday. On October 15, FIIs were net sellers of ₹5,285.37 crore and DIIs net buyers of ₹3,319.39 crore, which we covered in FII DII data for October 15. That works out, by our calculation, to a ₹6,451.29 crore swing in the foreign net number in a single session.

Friday’s close

The BSE Sensex finished at 74,729.27, up 413.66 points. The Nifty 50 settled at 23,146.15, up 148.80 points or 0.65%, BusinessLine reported, and NSE index data agrees on the Nifty close. This was an IT-led day. NSE data show the Nifty IT index up 3.92%, while Nifty Bank barely moved, up 0.06% at 55,844. Mid and small caps trailed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.11% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 0.01%.

According to BusinessLine, breadth leaned mildly positive, with advances beating declines 1.44 to 1. The rupee firmed to around 94.79 per dollar on RBI intervention. The paper also flagged Brent crude holding near $105.70 a barrel, which keeps India’s import bill under pressure, and the US 10-year Treasury yield sitting near 5.09%, a headwind for emerging-market flows in its view. The October picture so far

For the month through October 16, the Kotak Neo cash-segment table has FIIs as net sellers of ₹48,769.01 crore and DIIs as net buyers of ₹48,168.13 crore, so combined institutional selling comes to ₹600.88 crore. The same table shows Friday was the first of October’s 11 sessions where FIIs bought on a net basis, and the first where DIIs sold. Even with Friday’s buying, foreign selling this month is already more than the ₹47,143.48 crore FIIs sold through all of September. New to these terms? Our explainer on what is FII and DII covers how the two groups differ.

So what does the FII DII data mean? One day of foreign buying is a signal to watch, not a trend yet. It also came with a rally that was mostly about IT, while much of the broader market sat still. The next test isn’t far off. BusinessLine said HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank report quarterly results on Saturday, and the Jio Platforms IPO opens on October 21. Pocketful founder Sarvam Goel told the paper the Jio IPO will test liquidity. We’d watch whether FIIs keep buying next week and whether DIIs come back as buyers. And remember, the ₹1,165.92 crore and ₹3,661.28 crore numbers are provisional and may still be revised.
