Last week’s loss, wiped out in a session

The previous week had been unkind to the stock. Going by ET Now data, Bajaj Auto lost about 2.45% in the week to 9 October, sliding from ₹10,024 on 5 October to ₹9,778. Monday’s move clawed all of that back in one go and put the share above ₹10,000 again. At roughly ₹10,034, it is about 20% short of its 52-week high of ₹12,470.

We couldn’t find a company announcement in the reports we read that explains the jump. What we did see was a broader lift in autos. The BSE Auto index added 0.75%, ET Now reported, and Tata Motors PV (+1.63%) and Mahindra & Mahindra also finished among the gainers. Financial Express noted that realty and auto names held up relatively well and closed in the green, while IT, FMCG and banks did most of the damage.

How the wider market did

The big names had a rough day. The Sensex dropped 547.65 points to 71,924.68 as Brent crude climbed past $106 a barrel on Middle East tensions and foreign investors kept selling. ITC, Tech Mahindra, HUL, L&T and SBI dragged the Sensex the most. Breadth was fairly even, though. On the BSE, 2,292 stocks advanced and 2,163 declined, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 actually gained 1.42%. See our top gainers today report.

What we’re watching next

Over the next few weeks, autos will trade on monthly sales and Q2 results, and on how far high crude prices hurt fuel costs and demand. For traders, ₹10,000 has become the obvious round number on the chart. If the stock holds above it, last week’s dip looks like a blip. If it slips back under, we’re back in the recent range.
