Thursday is Sensex expiry October 15 — the weekly BSE Sensex options contract that settles at the cash close. After the October 14 session left the Sensex at 72,781.89, traders are watching how expiring open interest, gamma around the at-the-money strikes and stock-specific newsflow interact, not just where the Nifty 50 might print.

Sensex expiry October 15: Thursday cash settlement rules
Under BSE’s contract specifications, Sensex weekly options expire on the Thursday of the expiry week, are European-style, and are cash-settled on the closing price of the underlying index on expiry day. Trading runs until 3:30 pm IST; lot size is 20. Exchange-master calendars from Finostat and Quantsapp both list Thursday, 15 October 2026 as the live weekly Sensex expiry (next weekly 22 October; October monthly on 29 October).
That Thursday schedule has been in force since the September 2025 index-expiry reshuffle, when NSE weeklies moved to Tuesday and BSE Sensex weeklies to Thursday — the same rule mirrored in broker FAQs such as Share.Market.
Where Sensex options positioning sat into the session
As of the October 14 close, Quantsapp’s Sensex option chain for the 15 October expiry showed a fair price near 72,714.60 and an ATM strike of 72,700. The ATM straddle (call plus put at 72,700) was priced at 559.10, implying roughly a ±0.8% move by expiry — about 72,156 to 73,274 — with ATM implied volatility around 18.6%. Put-call ratio on open interest was 1.12, and max pain sat at 72,800.
Highest call open interest was at 75,000 (about 27.1 lakh shares on that strike), while the heaviest put OI was at 70,000 (about 29.3 lakh). Nearer spot, the 73,000 call and 72,000 put also carried large books — typical walls that can pin or accelerate the index when dealers hedge into the final hours.
Context for why Thursday still matters: BSE’s Chief Business Officer Sunil Ramrakhiani told the Indian Institutional Quant Conference that after Sensex expiry moved to Thursday, Sensex derivatives open interest jumped from around 17 lakh contracts to nearly 60 lakh, while more than 90% of trading volume remained in current-week contracts, as reported by Moneycontrol.
How weekly expiry spills into Sensex stocks
Weekly Sensex expiry is a derivatives event on a 30-stock basket. Dealer delta-hedging of large OI near ATM can spill into the cash market in the heaviest Sensex names in the last hour, especially when spot sits close to crowded strikes. That is different from a pure Nifty levels map: the question for cash traders on October 15 is whether hedging flows amplify single-stock swings already driven by results, IPOs and deal headlines.
The October 14 backdrop was soft but not a breakdown. The Hindu BusinessLine reported the Sensex down 251.89 points (0.34%) at 72,781.89 and the Nifty 50 down 99.25 points (0.44%) at 22,622.70, with Bank Nifty at 55,316 (−0.30%). Wholesale inflation and crude above $107 kept risk appetite in check ahead of US CPI — leaving options books still large into Thursday.

Levels to track into the 3:30 IST close
Into Sensex expiry October 15, watch whether spot holds near the ATM / max-pain zone around 72,700–72,800 as OI rolls off; whether the expiring straddle’s ~0.8% implied move is realised or crushed; and whether Sensex constituents with heavy results or deal news print wider ranges than the index. Cash settlement at the official Sensex close ends the weekly book; fresh OI then builds in the 22 October weekly.
