FMCG stocks fall today, and on Monday, October 12, 2026, they did more damage to Dalal Street than any other sector. The Nifty FMCG index dropped 1.67% to 44,113.40, according to Capital Market, wiping out much of the 2.02% rally from the session before.
The Sensex ended 547.65 points (0.76%) lower at 71,924.68, and the Nifty gave up 0.70% to 22,363.35.

FMCG stocks fall today: the biggest losers
Every one of the ten stocks on Capital Market’s list of Nifty FMCG decliners finished in the red:
- Dabur India: down 3.47%
- ITC: down 3.29%
- Colgate-Palmolive (India): down 2.45%
- Hindustan Unilever: down 1.91%
- Godfrey Phillips India: down 1.72%
- Varun Beverages: down 1.47%
- Godrej Consumer Products: down 1.45%
- Nestle India: down 1.05%
- Britannia Industries and United Spirits: down 0.95% each
ITC and HUL carry a lot of weight in both the Nifty and the Sensex, so when they fall, the benchmarks feel it. ET Now called FMCG the day’s worst sector. Over on the BSE, the FMCG index lost 1.34%.
Why consumer names got sold
There was no company-specific bombshell here. The reports point to the macro backdrop:
- Crude oil: Brent for December settlement climbed 0.85% to $105.61 a barrel, per Capital Market. Expensive oil pushes up packaging, freight and raw-material bills for consumer companies.
- Bond yields: India’s 10-year yield moved up to 7.388% from 7.302%. When yields rise, pricey defensive stocks lose some of their appeal.
- Inflation worries: traders were wary ahead of India’s inflation numbers, which were due later that day. HDFC Sky tied the weakness to energy prices and the squeeze on household budgets.
- Profit-taking: some of this was just Friday’s 2% gain being handed back.
Retail also weak: DMart falls on margins
Retail didn’t escape either. Avenue Supermarts (DMart) dropped 4.49% after its Q2 FY27 numbers. Revenue from operations grew 18.42% year-on-year to ₹19,206.18 crore, and standalone profit was up 7.64% year-on-year at ₹803.60 crore. The catch: profit was 14.12% below the previous quarter, Capital Market noted, and brokerages flagged pressure on margins.
Outside the large caps, things looked better
This was a large-cap sell-off. BSE breadth was actually positive, with 2,300 shares advancing and 2,153 declining, and the BSE 250 SmallCap index rose 1.08%. Media, auto and realty were up as well. We covered how the Nifty Media index surged on the same day.
What it means for investors
FMCG gets called defensive, but an oil and inflation shock hurts it from both sides. Costs go up just when shoppers start tightening their belts.
Next up are the inflation print, crude prices and the Q2 results from consumer companies. When the results land, we’d look hard at gross margins and volume growth. Our guide on how to analyse quarterly results shows how.
