Why is market down today in India? Monday, October 12, 2026, started well and ended badly. The Sensex fell 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to 71,924.68, and the Nifty 50 shed 157.10 points, or 0.70%, to 22,363.35. Both indices opened in the green and then handed back every bit of it, ET Now reported.
No single trigger here. Foreign selling, costly crude, firmer bond yields and weak FMCG, IT and bank heavyweights all piled on.

Why Is Market Down Today in India: How the Day Played Out
The Nifty opened at 22,593.20 and the Sensex at 72,771.32, according to The Hindu BusinessLine. Profit-booking set in by mid-session.
The Nifty finished almost 288 points below its high of the day, and the Sensex closed more than 900 points off its intraday peak, 5paisa noted. India VIX, the fear gauge, climbed over 6%.
The fall came right after Friday, October 9, when the Nifty had gained 1.30% and snapped an eight-week losing streak.
Reason 1: The FPI Exit Hasn’t Stopped
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) took out about ₹44,166 crore from Indian equities in October up to October 9. Their outflow for 2026 is now close to ₹3.04 lakh crore, per 5paisa.
A firmer dollar and higher US Treasury yields make emerging markets look less attractive. And since foreign funds mostly sell large caps, the benchmarks take the hit first.

Reason 2: Brent Is Sitting Near $105
Brent crude rose about 0.65% to trade close to $105 a barrel as Middle East tensions simmered. India imports nearly 90% of its oil, so this hurts.
Pricier crude swells the import bill and feeds inflation. It also eats into margins for airlines, paint makers, chemical companies and transporters.
Reason 3: Yields Are Creeping Up
Vikram Kasat of PL Capital flagged rising 10-year government bond yields, persistent FII outflows and weak global cues. When yields rise, capital gets costlier and some money drifts from equities towards bonds.
Reason 4: FMCG, IT and Banks Pulled the Index Down
The Nifty FMCG index dropped 1.67% and Nifty IT slipped 0.79%. PSU banks were soft too.
Apollo Hospitals, ITC, Tech Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro and Max Healthcare were the biggest Nifty losers. Tech Mahindra lost 3.26% to ₹1,464.80, while ITC fell 3.21% to ₹257.45, per ET Now’s live blog. In all, thirty-seven Nifty stocks ended in the red.
Banks had their own worry too. Our Bank Nifty report for October 12 explains the RBI’s daily CRR change.
The Bright Spots
Not everything fell. The Nifty Smallcap index gained about 1.42% and the Midcap index closed slightly higher. Auto, media and realty stocks held their ground.
Dr Reddy’s topped the Nifty gainers, up 3.08% at ₹1,233.90. Bajaj Auto added 2.75% to ₹10,047.
The rupee had a better day as well, recovering nearly 1% to about ₹95.76 per dollar after the RBI’s new dollar-supply steps for oil marketing companies. Our rupee vs dollar report has the details.
What This Means for Investors
Monday showed rallies are still fragile while FPIs keep selling and crude stays expensive. A big gap between the day’s high and the close usually means sellers are using every bounce to get out.
We’d watch three things this week: FPI flow data, Brent crude, and Q2 numbers from big names such as Wipro and HDFC Bank, plus how the market takes HCLTech’s results, which came after Monday’s close. Healthy broader-market breadth is a small comfort, but the benchmarks need foreign money back to turn.
