The FII DII data for October 15 has an odd shape: foreign investors sold Indian shares much harder on the very day the Sensex and Nifty put up their sharpest one-day rally in weeks. Provisional exchange numbers for Thursday show foreign institutional and portfolio investors (FII/FPI) as net sellers of ₹5,285.37 crore in the cash market, and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) as net buyers of ₹3,319.39 crore. This time the domestic money didn’t cover the whole foreign outflow, so institutions together were net sellers of ₹1,965.98 crore. The rest of the session is in our stock market today India hub.
FII DII data October 15: what each side bought and sold
Here are the numbers from the NSE FII/FPI and DII capital-market report for 15 October 2026. They are provisional and can be revised:
- FII/FPI: bought ₹12,735.59 crore and sold ₹18,020.96 crore, for a net sale of ₹5,285.37 crore.
- DII: bought ₹19,438.65 crore and sold ₹16,119.26 crore, for a net purchase of ₹3,319.39 crore.
- Combined net: −₹1,965.98 crore. On our maths, DII buying soaked up about 63% of the foreign net sale.
CNBC-TV18 carried the same buy, sell and net totals. Thursday’s foreign sale was nearly three times Wednesday’s net outflow of ₹1,857.44 crore, a day when DIIs put in a net ₹2,670.44 crore (we covered that in FII DII data for October 14). Going by the daily table on Kotak Neo, it was the biggest net foreign sale since October 8, when FIIs sold a net ₹12,943.58 crore.
Foreigners sold while the index ran
And it was a strong up day. The BSE Sensex ended 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, higher at 74,315.61, while the Nifty 50 added 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to 22,997.35, BusinessLine reported; NSE index data matches that Nifty close. At one point in the session the Nifty touched 23,056. Large caps like Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and Tech Mahindra did the heavy lifting, and NSE data has the Nifty IT index up 1.82%. CNBC-TV18 said that was the index’s third straight gain, taking it up nearly 11% so far this week.
Step outside the large caps and the picture flips. NSE data shows the Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.36% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 1.31%, and the market-wide breadth numbers in the BusinessLine report had 2,218 declines against 1,343 advances. Yes Bank, IDBI Bank and Nestle India were among the big losers. On the macro side, BusinessLine said the rupee gained for a fifth straight session to close at 95.06 to the dollar, and Brent crude slipped about 2.3% to roughly $103.6 a barrel. Our Nifty outlook for October 16 lays out the levels to watch next.
The October tally so far
For the month up to October 15, the Kotak Neo cash-segment table has FIIs as net sellers of ₹49,934.93 crore and DIIs as net buyers of ₹51,829.41 crore, so combined institutional buying is a thin ₹1,894.48 crore. FIIs have been net sellers in all 10 of October’s trading sessions, and the same table shows their October total has already crossed the ₹47,143.48 crore they sold in the whole of September. If the terms are new to you, our explainer on what is FII and DII covers how the two groups differ.
We’d read Thursday as a warning, not a verdict. It was the third session this month, after October 7 and 8, where DII buying fell short of FII selling. The rally was also narrow, with a few heavyweights carrying it while most stocks fell. If foreign selling at this scale carries on as second-quarter results roll in, a handful of large caps may not be enough to hold the indices up. The thing to watch is whether DIIs go back to fully absorbing the outflows. And keep in mind that the ₹5,285 crore and ₹3,319 crore numbers are provisional and may still be revised.
