The Nifty outlook for October 16 hangs on one level: 23,000. The Nifty 50 rallied 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to 22,997.35 on Thursday — its biggest gain since June 12 — and briefly topped 23,000 before closing just under it, Business Standard reported. The Sensex jumped 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to 74,315.61. The catch: a handful of large caps did the lifting while most of the market fell.

Why the Nifty outlook for October 16 hinges on breadth

Forty-two of the 50 Nifty stocks rose, but declining shares on the NSE outnumbered advancing ones by 1,755 to 898, according to Business Standard. The Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.36% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.31%. IT stocks, private banks and Reliance Industries carried the index, while Nestle India fell 7.76% after its results. Our Nestle India Q2 results breakdown covers what spooked investors there.

There were positives on the chart. BusinessLine noted the Nifty closed above its 20-day exponential moving average for the first time since August 14, and the index did this while South Korea’s Kospi plunged 7.57%. CNBC-TV18 said the Nifty is on course for a second straight weekly gain — something it last managed across the last week of July and the first week of August — and that it needs to close above 22,520 on Friday to lock that in.

23,000 upside, 22,800 downside: the levels desks are marking

  • Upside: CNBC-TV18 sees 23,000 as the key level; holding above it could open a move towards 23,200. Shrikant Chouhan of Kotak Securities puts the hurdle at 23,100 to 23,175, and Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking told BusinessLine that 23,100 to 23,150 is the next key resistance.
  • Downside: CNBC-TV18 flags 22,650 to 22,600 as immediate support. Chouhan’s nearer support is 22,875 to 22,800, and he said sentiment could change if the Nifty falls below 22,800.
  • Momentum: Vatsal Bhuva of LKP Securities said the Nifty’s RSI shows a bullish crossover with positive divergence and could retest the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement near 23,180. He still treats the move as a relief rally because the index is below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

Bank Nifty, 56,000 rejection and the Yes Bank drag

Bank Nifty rose 494.50 points, or 0.89%, to 55,810.50, per BusinessLine. CNBC-TV18 said it briefly crossed 56,000 but could not hold it as Yes Bank slumped. Yes Bank closed 14.53% lower at ₹18.12 on the NSE after the Supreme Court ruled against the 2020 write-off of its AT-1 bonds, CNBC-TV18 reported. The index needs a close above 55,250 for a third straight weekly gain. Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities sees support at 55,200 to 55,300, with a break pointing to 54,900, and resistance at 56,300 to 56,400, with a breakout targeting 56,800.

Friday’s result calendar and Thursday’s stock reactions

Federal Bank is the most important result on Friday, according to CNBC-TV18, with Bajaj Housing Finance, Urban Company, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals, Oberoi Realty and Ujjivan Small Finance Bank also reporting. Stocks reacting to numbers released on Thursday include Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Jio Financial Services, Persistent Systems, Angel One and IRFC.

  • Wipro guided for Q3 revenue growth of -1.5% to 0.5% sequentially in constant currency. See our Wipro Q2 results report.
  • Tech Mahindra declared a ₹15 interim dividend and approved a 1:1 bonus issue; its net profit rose 6.7% from the June quarter to ₹1,586 crore.
  • Persistent Systems reported a 27.2% quarter-on-quarter fall in net profit to ₹352 crore, even as rupee revenue rose 8.4% to ₹4,664 crore.

On the macro side, Brent crude fell about 2% to roughly $104 a barrel and the rupee rose for a fifth straight session to 95.06 per dollar, Business Standard said.

Momentum without participation: how traders should treat Friday

The index has momentum but not participation. A close above 23,000 on Friday, alongside better breadth, would suggest buying is spreading beyond the leaders. A slip back below 22,800 would point to Thursday being a large-cap rotation rather than a fresh uptrend. With banking majors reporting on Saturday, traders may keep positions light.
