Nifty FMCG on October 14 was the calmest part of the market. The consumer-goods index rose 1.21% to 45,271.70 while the benchmarks slipped on a hotter-than-expected wholesale inflation number. All 15 stocks in the index closed higher, with Nestle India out in front a day before its September-quarter results, according to NSE end-of-day index data compiled by TrackLivePrice.

Nifty FMCG October 14: the numbers

The index gained 540.55 points over the previous close of 44,731.15. Its range for the day was 44,665.60 to 45,272.50, and it closed within a point of the high, so buyers stayed in right till the end. The 1.21% rise is measured from Tuesday’s close and lines up with the end-session market commentary on Wealthy.

  • Nestle India: the index’s top performer, up 3.69% to ₹1,383.20 on volume of about 42.2 lakh shares.
  • Tata Consumer Products: 2.91% higher at ₹987.90.
  • Britannia Industries: 2.64% higher at ₹4,928.00.
  • Dabur India: 2.55% higher at ₹388.40.
  • Colgate-Palmolive (India): 1.41% higher at ₹1,826.40.
  • Hindustan Unilever: 1.07% higher at ₹1,895.50.
  • Smallest gainers: Varun Beverages added just 0.15%, ITC 0.19% and Godrej Consumer Products 0.29%.

This was the second good day running. The index had already risen 1.40% on Tuesday. Over the two sessions it put on 1,158.30 points, or 2.63%, from Monday’s close of 44,113.40, more than making up Monday’s 1.67% drop.

Defensives held up while the market slipped

The rest of the market went the other way. The Nifty 50 closed at 22,622.70, down 99.25 points or 0.44%, and the Sensex lost 251.89 points to 72,781.89, The Hindu BusinessLine reported. WPI inflation for September jumped to 11.39% from 9.92% in August, which pushed bond yields up, and Brent crude stayed above $107 a barrel. Nifty Pharma was the worst sector, down 1.30%, while Nifty IT gained about 1.1% and Oil & Gas about 1%. Our October 14 closing report has the full session.

Geojit’s Vinod Nair said encouraging business updates from IT, FMCG and PSU banks had strengthened investors’ preference for companies with clearer earnings visibility, India Today reported. That matches how the day played out. Money went to sectors where demand looks more predictable and moved away from rate-sensitive financials and autos.

Still a long way from last year’s peak

Two strong sessions don’t change the bigger picture much. The index is still 21.19% below its 52-week high of 57,445.20 from October 23, 2025, and only about 4.2% above the 52-week low of 43,442.30 it touched on October 1, 2026. NSE’s published price-to-earnings ratio for the index on October 14 was 31.39.

Input costs are still the big worry. BusinessLine noted that retail inflation rose to 5.54%, and when price pressure spreads into producer and input costs, companies that can’t pass on higher expenses risk thinner margins. We looked at what September’s food prices mean for packaged-goods makers in our food inflation and FMCG margins analysis.

Nestle’s numbers are the next test

That test comes fast. Nestle India reports second-quarter results on Thursday, October 15, along with Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Jio Financial Services and Polycab, according to BusinessLine. After a 3.69% run-up, some expectations are already in the stock, so domestic volume growth and gross margins will count for more than the headline profit. If the results show companies absorbing input costs without giving up volume, the sector’s recovery from its October 1 low could run further. A margin miss would put the input-cost worry right back in front. Track the day’s moves on our Stock Market Today India hub.
