The Nifty IT surge on October 13, 2026, was the story of the session. The sectoral index jumped 5.22% to 29,830.10, its biggest one-day gain since 12 May 2025, after HCLTech’s September-quarter beat pulled up TCS, Infosys and Tech Mahindra and helped the Nifty 50 get back above 22,700.

Nifty IT surge October 13: up 5.22%, every stock green

Business Standard reported the Nifty IT index up 5.22% at 29,830.10, with all 10 constituents higher. That’s its best session in roughly 17 months. HCLTech led with an 8.42% gain. On the benchmarks, the same report had the Nifty 50 up 1.6% at 22,721.95 and the BSE Sensex up 1.54% at 73,033.81. Both logged their biggest single-day rise since 12 June, and 46 of the 50 Nifty stocks closed higher.

ET Now had the Sensex up 1,109.10 points (closing at 73,033.78) and the Nifty up 358.60. It listed HCLTech, TCS (6.59%), Tech Mahindra (4.90%) and Infosys (4.44%) among the Sensex movers behind the IT-led bounce. There was a policy cue too. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the debate on LTCG tax and STT was healthy and that she was keen to hear stakeholders, which helped risk appetite that day (Business Standard; ET Now).

What HCLTech’s Q2 did for the IT pack

The trigger was HCLTech’s Q2 FY27 result on 12 October. Its official release showed revenue of ₹35,620 crore, up 3% on the quarter and 11.5% on the year. Net income hit a record ₹5,132 crore (up 11% QoQ and 21.2% YoY), and EBIT margin widened 131 bps sequentially to 18.2%. Advanced AI revenue came in at $219 million (78% YoY in constant currency), and new bookings were $3.3 billion, up 27% YoY. Business Standard also cited the $219 million AI figure alongside the stock’s 8.42% jump the next session, which ties the earnings surprise neatly to the Nifty IT surge.

Reading the bounce for Indian markets

We’d read October 13 as a sharp bounce from oversold levels, driven by solid earnings and a softer tone on tax, rather than a lasting re-rating of IT. Business Standard pointed out that the Nifty was still down over the week, the month and three months even after the rally. So the next tests are whether IT follows through and whether FII selling eases. Read this with our Sensex rally and LTCG–STT context from October 13 and the live Stock Market Today India hub. Then watch HCLTech’s raised FY27 guidance range, the Q2 prints from peers Wipro, Tech Mahindra and Persistent, and whether Nifty IT holds above its pre-surge level instead of giving back the one-day spike.
