Banks did most of the damage on Monday, 12 October 2026, and the nifty bank decline RBI connection was hard to miss. Lenders stayed under pressure after the Reserve Bank of India tightened its daily cash reserve ratio (CRR) maintenance rule, and the Nifty Bank index ended 339 points lower at 54,918. That drag helped pull the Sensex down about 548 points to near 71,925, and the Nifty 50 lost 157 points to 22,363, according to CNBC-TV18’s market wrap.
Our Stock Market Today India hub has the full session snapshot, including oil, the dollar and flows. Here we stick to two questions: why did the bank pack lead the fall, and what does the CRR change actually do?
Nifty Bank decline and the RBI CRR rule: what changed for banks
On 9 October 2026 the RBI changed the daily minimum CRR maintenance requirement. The headline CRR rate itself did not move. Scheduled banks now have to hold at least 99 per cent of required CRR on every day of the reporting fortnight, up from 90 per cent, starting with the fortnight beginning 16 October 2026. The fortnightly average still has to meet the prescribed requirement. The full text is in the RBI’s Section 42(1) notification (RBI/2026-27/290).
Put simply, banks have to park more idle cash with the central bank every day, and most of the old 10-percentage-point daily averaging cushion is gone. That cuts their day-to-day liquidity flexibility. The market widely reads it as a way to push overnight rates up toward the policy repo, which the 7 October MPC decision raised 25 basis points to 5.50%, without touching the statutory CRR percentage. CNBC-TV18 reported the same 90%-to-99% shift and pointed to a large system liquidity surplus around the time of the announcement.
How the banks dragged the indices on Oct 12
In CNBC-TV18’s list of reasons for Monday’s close near the day’s lows, banking pressure after the CRR measures came first. Livemint put the Nifty Bank decline at 0.61% and the Nifty IT fall at 0.79%, so heavyweight financials and tech were both weighing on the indices. On the Sensex, Livemint named SBI among the top drags, along with Bharti Airtel, ITC, L&T and Reliance. On the Nifty, CNBC-TV18 had ICICI Bank alongside L&T and Reliance among the biggest point losers.
The wider mood didn’t help. Livemint flagged the dollar index near an 18-month high around 102.5, and NSDL data showing FPI equity sales of about ₹44,166 crore in October up to the previous Friday, and roughly ₹3.04 lakh crore so far in 2026. CNBC-TV18 also linked crude-sensitive names to Brent near $106 a barrel. Not everything fell, though. CNBC-TV18’s midcap gauge rose 47 points to 58,835 while the benchmarks slipped, which fits the midcap-versus-Nifty split we tracked separately.
Reading the move if you trade or track banks
A weaker Nifty Bank after a liquidity-tightening tweak is not the same thing as slower loan growth or a higher CRR rate. The headline reserve ratio hasn’t changed. What hurts is the daily cash parked at the RBI and less room to manage swings within the fortnight. That can push up short-term funding costs and keep private and public bank stocks touchy until money-market rates settle nearer the 5.50% repo.
The rupee had a good day too. CNBC-TV18 said it gained more than 1% to trade below 96 per dollar after the RBI measures, which shows the policy mix is working on the currency as well as on liquidity. We covered the INR side of that Monday in Rupee Rebound RBI Measures, and how Bank Nifty traded the next day, with the ₹25,000 crore OMO sale in focus, is in Bank Nifty Today After RBI OMO.
For the near term, we’d watch two things: whether Nifty Bank holds above the Oct 12 closing zone around 54,900 once the 16 October fortnight starts under the 99% daily CRR floor, and whether overnight rates drift closer to repo. How banks lead or lag in each session will tell you more than any “CRR hike” headline, because this was a change to the maintenance rule, not a statutory CRR increase. Check closing prints on NSE/BSE and the RBI notification before acting on any one market wrap.
