Nifty Pharma today was one of the few corners of the market that didn’t bleed. On Monday, 12 October 2026, the index gained about 0.45% to finish near 26,079, even as the Nifty 50 dropped 0.70% to 22,363.35. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories did the heavy lifting, up 2.71% at ₹1,229.40, which made it the best performer in the entire Nifty 50, Upstox reported.

A split day for healthcare

Healthcare went two ways on Monday. Drugmakers inched up, but hospital stocks got hit hard in the final hour, as traders reacted to a Supreme Court hearing on drug pricing, according to CNBC-TV18. Apollo Hospitals lost 3.15%, Max Healthcare 2.02%, and the BSE Hospitals index ended 2.04% lower, ET Now said. Fortis Healthcare fell 3.69% too. The full story of that sell-off is in our hospital stocks report.

Still, this was a small, patchy move, not a rally. Seven of the eleven big names listed above went up and four went down, and the coverage we read pointed to no single sector-wide trigger.

Why pharma held up

Pharma is seen as a defensive pocket. Its earnings lean on exports and steady demand at home rather than on where the economy is in its cycle, and Monday was a fair example. The Sensex shed 547.65 points as crude rose to about $105.8 a barrel, foreign investors kept selling and bond yields moved up. FMCG, PSU bank and IT stocks did most of the damage. The rupee, meanwhile, gained 93 paise to 95.78 (provisional) against the dollar. Exporters watch that, since a stronger rupee shrinks the rupee value of what they earn abroad.

What comes next

Q2 results are the next real test. US generics pricing, growth at home and currency effects will be what the market looks at. On the hospital side, any update in the Supreme Court drug-pricing case will be watched closely. We follow sector moves every day on our Stock Market Today India hub.
