Why is the market down this week? Monday didn’t help. Friday’s 1.30% bounce was wiped out on 12 October 2026, with the Nifty 50 losing 157.10 points to close at 22,363.35 and the Sensex shedding 547.65 points to 71,924.68, as ET Now reported. And once trading ended, the inflation numbers landed and gave everyone something else to worry about. Four things are weighing on the market as the week begins.

Why is market down this week: 4 reasons

1. Retail inflation jumped to a 23-month high

CPI inflation climbed to 5.54% in September, up from a revised 4.83% in August. That’s the highest reading in 23 months, going by NSO data reported by Business Standard. Food inflation went to 7.74% from 5.97%, and onions did most of the damage, with prices up more than 108% on a year ago. This is now the fourth straight month above the RBI’s 4% target. India Ratings’ Devendra Pant thinks October could come in around 6%.

2. The RBI is tightening

A hotter inflation print only strengthens the RBI’s hawkish case. The MPC took the repo rate up to 5.50% on 7 October and made it clear that cuts aren’t on the table for now, per the MPC resolution. On top of that, banks are getting used to a rule that makes them hold 99% of their required CRR every single day from 16 October. No surprise, then, that banks led Monday’s fall, with the Nifty Bank down 339 points. We’ve laid out the connection in how the repo rate affects the stock market.

3. Foreign investors keep selling

FPIs took ₹44,166 crore out of Indian equities in October up to 9 October, which pushes 2026 outflows to roughly ₹3.04 lakh crore. Analysts point to US 10-year yields sitting above 5.2%. There’s more detail in FPI outflows cross ₹3 lakh crore.

4. Crude oil stays high

Brent moved up to about $106 a barrel on Monday, and oil-sensitive names like IndiGo and Asian Paints took the hit, CNBC-TV18 reported. Expensive oil feeds straight into inflation and keeps pressure on the rupee.

Inflation, rates, foreign flows and oil are now feeding each other. That is why single good days, like Friday’s rebound, have struggled to last.

What held up

It wasn’t a red screen everywhere. The Nifty Smallcap index actually rose 1.42% on Monday, and media, auto and realty stocks closed higher. The rupee firmed up too, gaining 93 paise to 95.78 (provisional) after the RBI’s currency steps. More in Nifty Smallcap today.

What to watch the rest of the week

  • Q2 results from big IT, banking and consumer names (see Q2 results this week)
  • How the market takes the CPI print on Tuesday morning
  • Daily FII/DII flows, along with crude and the rupee

What it means for investors

Most of the pressure is coming from rates, oil and global money flows. Company earnings haven’t fallen apart. That’s exactly why this week’s results matter so much. We’re tracking all of it on our Stock Market Today India hub.
