Foreign money came back with a bang on Tuesday. The FII DII data for October 27 shows foreign institutional investors net bought Rs 4,240.39 crore of Indian shares in the cash market, while domestic institutions turned sellers for a change, offloading a net Rs 1,250.03 crore, as per provisional exchange figures reported by Moneycontrol and CNBC-TV18.

FII DII data October 27: the numbers

FIIs bought shares worth Rs 24,517.65 crore and sold Rs 20,277.26 crore. DIIs bought Rs 15,702.74 crore and sold Rs 16,952.77 crore. Put the two sides together and institutions were net buyers of roughly Rs 2,990 crore for the day.

Two things stand out. First, this is the biggest single-day net purchase by FIIs so far in October. Their previous best for the month was Rs 1,165.92 crore on October 16, so Tuesday’s figure is more than three times that. Second, it flips the script from Monday, October 26, when FIIs sold a net Rs 1,462.49 crore and DIIs bought Rs 2,609.57 crore.

For DIIs, this was the first net selling day since October 16, when they sold Rs 3,661.28 crore, according to Moneycontrol.

Why one day doesn’t make a trend

We’d be careful about reading too much into a single session. October has mostly been a selling month for foreign investors. In the provisional table published by Capital Market, FIIs were net sellers on 11 of the 15 sessions between October 6 and October 27, including a heavy Rs 12,943.58 crore outflow on October 8. Domestic funds have been the ones soaking up that supply. One strong buying day is a welcome sign, but it needs follow-through before anyone calls a turn.

These are also provisional numbers. The exchanges publish them the same evening, and final figures from depositories can differ slightly.

What the market did with it

Strangely, the headline indices barely moved. The Sensex ended 8 points lower at 73,599 and the Nifty slipped 3.45 points to 22,750, CNBC-TV18 reported. The action was underneath. The Nifty Midcap index rose 565 points to 57,030, while the Nifty Bank index lost 392 points to 53,975. Moneycontrol noted that the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 gained 1% and 2.7% respectively, and India VIX fell 4.4%.

IT dragged. The Nifty IT index fell over 1.4% after Infosys cut its FY27 revenue outlook, per Moneycontrol. On the other side, Tata Consumer Products rose nearly 7% after its Q2 numbers and Bharti Airtel climbed over 3% after TRAI’s September subscriber data, according to CNBC-TV18. Our Sensex and Nifty wrap for October 27 has more on the session.

What to watch on Wednesday

Results season keeps the pressure on. Siddhartha Khemka of Motilal Oswal Financial Services told Moneycontrol that investors will track Q2 numbers from Hindustan Unilever, Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, TVS Motor, Hyundai Motor India, Pidilite Industries, Vedanta, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance, Hero MotoCorp and JSW Energy, among others. He also flagged Brent crude holding around US$116 a barrel because of disruptions in West Asia, which is not great news for an oil importer like India.

Going by the same Capital Market table, FIIs have not bought on two straight sessions at any point between October 6 and October 27, so a second buying day on Wednesday would mean something. Compare with Monday’s flows in our FII DII data for October 26, and keep an eye on the daily NSE FII/DII report.
