Monday, October 12, 2026 was a red day for the indices, but the top gainers today NSE list is a reminder that a falling market doesn’t drag every stock down with it. The Nifty 50 shed 157.10 points (0.70%) to close at 22,363.35, and the Sensex slipped 547.65 points (0.76%) to 71,924.68. Pharma, auto and defence names still ended in the green, and smallcaps actually had a good session.
Below we go through the day’s biggest NSE gainers in the Nifty 50, the Nifty Midcap 100 and the Nifty Smallcap 100, what those moves are telling us, and how to use a gainers list without getting carried away by it. The price data comes from exchange-based reports by Upstox and Business Upturn, both published after the October 12 close.

Top gainers today NSE: the Nifty 50 names that held up
Ten Nifty 50 stocks did the heavy lifting. Here are the closing prices and gains Business Upturn reported:
| Stock | Close (₹) | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Dr Reddy’s Laboratories | 1,229.40 | +2.7% |
| Bajaj Auto | 10,034 | +2.6% |
| Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles | 284.50 | +1.6% |
| Bharat Electronics | 373.90 | +1.6% |
| BSE Ltd | 3,330.20 | +1.3% |
| Eicher Motors | 7,119 | +1.0% |
| Cipla | 1,311.30 | +0.8% |
| Mahindra & Mahindra | 2,813 | +0.6% |
| Kotak Mahindra Bank | 443.40 | +0.5% |
| HCL Technologies | 1,223 | +0.5% |
Upstox had sharper figures for the top five: Dr Reddy’s up 2.71%, Bajaj Auto up 2.62%, Tata Motors PV up 1.63%, BEL up 1.56% and BSE up 1.31%.
A few things jump out from the Nifty list
- Autos ran the show. Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors PV, Eicher Motors and M&M all made the top ten. Auto was one of the very few sectors that closed higher.
- Pharma stood its ground. Dr Reddy’s and Cipla went up even while hospital stocks were being sold off. The hospital names fell after a Supreme Court hearing on drug margins. Read why hospital stocks fell today.
- Defence and exchange stocks stayed firm. BEL and BSE Ltd both finished higher.
- Nobody ran away with it. The best Nifty performer gained less than 3%. That’s what you usually get when the index is falling and buyers are being picky.
On a day the Nifty falls, the stocks that still close higher tell you where buyers are willing to commit money despite the headwinds.
Nifty Midcap 100: who led the midcaps
The Nifty Midcap 100 barely moved, up 0.08% (47.25 points) at 58,834.55, according to Upstox. Underneath that flat close, a handful of stocks moved hard:
- UPL: +5.40%
- Suzlon Energy: +5.24%
- PB Fintech: +3.46%
- One 97 Communications (Paytm): +3.30%
- LIC Housing Finance: +2.96%
At the other end, Lenskart Solutions dropped 3.86%. Upstox pointed to a CNBC-TV18 report that Alpha Wave Ventures was looking to sell a stake through a block deal, while noting the company hadn’t confirmed it.
Nifty Smallcap 100: where the real action was
Smallcaps comfortably beat the benchmarks. The Nifty Smallcap 100 climbed 1.42% (272.10 points) to 19,425.80. Its biggest gainers, per Upstox:
- Gallantt Ispat: +20%
- Syngene International: +7.66%
- Tata Chemicals: +7.43%
- Welspun Corp: +6.35%
- Nuvama Wealth Management: +6.27%
A 20% jump in one day, like Gallantt Ispat’s, is unusual and may simply be the stock hitting its exchange price band. Big single-day spikes in smaller companies call for extra care, and we explain why further down.
The flip side: the Nifty’s biggest losers
To keep things balanced, these were the weakest Nifty 50 stocks of the day, according to Upstox:
- Apollo Hospitals: -3.15%
- ITC: -3.05%
- Tech Mahindra: -2.85%
- Larsen & Toubro: -2.05%
- Max Healthcare: -2.02%

What the market looked like on October 12
A gainers list only makes sense against the day it came from. Here’s the backdrop, all from Upstox:
- The Sensex fell as much as 1.1% during the session, to an intraday low of 71,676.10.
- The Nifty hit a session low of 22,304.45, down 0.96%.
- India VIX, the market’s fear gauge, shot up as much as 8.1% to an intraday high of 15.54.
- On Friday, FIIs were net sellers of ₹3,568.90 crore, while DIIs bought ₹4,743.26 crore.
Costlier crude, foreign selling and the RBI’s tightening moves all weighed on the mood. Our why is market down today report breaks down the causes.
How we read a top gainers list
A daily gainers list is where research starts, not a shopping list. If you want the basics first, our explainer on what top gainers and losers are is a good place to begin. After that, this is how we’d use one.
1. Find out why the stock moved
Every big move has a trigger. It could be results, an order win, a broker upgrade, a block deal or news hitting the whole sector. If you can’t find the reason, be suspicious of the move. A stock that rallies on solid earnings is a completely different animal from one that rallies on a rumour.
2. Check the volume
A price jump on heavy volume means plenty of people are behind it. A jump on thin volume can unwind just as quickly. HDFC Sky’s 3:30 PM snapshot, for instance, showed more than 94 lakh Tata Motors PV shares changing hands that day. Before reading too much into any move, compare the stock’s volume with its own recent average.
3. See what the sector did
On October 12, a bunch of auto stocks went up together. When a whole sector moves, the reason is usually something sector-wide, like demand data or input costs. When one stock moves on its own, it’s usually company news.
4. Keep the index in mind
Rising on a day the index falls is a sign of relative strength. That kind of strength often carries beyond one session, which is why traders jot these names down to follow up on.
A gainers list tells you what moved, not why it moved or whether it will keep moving. The research starts after the list.
5. Watch out for circuit moves
A smallcap stuck at a 20% upper circuit can be tough to buy and just as tough to sell. The price can gap down the very next morning. Don’t chase a stock frozen at its upper band unless you understand the news behind it.
6. Trade a plan, not a hunch
If a gainer fits your strategy, fix your entry, stop loss and position size before you place the trade. Our guides on stop loss in trading and the position sizing formula show you how.
How much volume backed the top five
The price change on its own doesn’t tell you how strong a move really was. HDFC Sky’s 3:30 PM snapshot of top gainers and losers listed the traded volume for each of the leaders:
| Stock | Price (₹) | Change | Shares traded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dr Reddy’s Laboratories | 1,229.40 | +2.71% | 17,55,792 |
| Bajaj Auto | 10,034.00 | +2.62% | 3,13,818 |
| Tata Motors PV | 284.45 | +1.63% | 94,22,370 |
| Bharat Electronics | 373.90 | +1.56% | 84,20,883 |
| BSE Ltd | 3,330.20 | +1.31% | 33,38,358 |
You can’t line up raw share counts across stocks, because their prices are so far apart. Bajaj Auto trades above ₹10,000, while Tata Motors PV trades below ₹300. To size up a move, compare each stock’s volume with its own recent average, or look at the rupee value traded.
Gainers lists and 52-week highs are not the same thing
These two lists answer different questions. The gainers list shows the biggest moves in one session. A 52-week high list shows stocks trading at their highest level in a year, whatever happened that particular day.
In a strong market the two often overlap. On a weak day like October 12, they may not. A stock can sit at the top of the gainers list and still be miles below its yearly high, so it pays to check both. Our guide on what a 52-week high is covers how traders use that signal.
A simple after-market habit
- Once the market closes, write down the top five gainers and the top five losers in the Nifty 50.
- Add one line on why each stock moved, with a source.
- Mark the ones that rose along with their sector or on above-average volume.
- Look at the marked names again over the next three to five sessions before you act.
Done this way, the list stays a research tool instead of a nudge towards impulse trades.
Mistakes people make with daily movers
- Buying at the close after a big jump. A lot of the move may already be in the price.
- Skipping the losers list. Losers show where risk is piling up, and that matters every bit as much.
- Treating one day as a trend. One session is just noise until it repeats.
- Mixing up indices. A 2% move in a Nifty 50 stock is a far bigger deal than a 2% move in a jumpy smallcap.
What we’re watching on October 13
- Whether autos and pharma can hold on to their relative strength.
- India’s inflation data and how the bond market takes it.
- Crude oil prices and FII flows.
- The Q2 results lined up this week, which will throw up a fresh set of gainers and losers.
