Friday was quieter than the rest of the week, but it ended in the right place. On Nifty October 16, 2026, the index added 148.80 points, or 0.65%, to 23,146.15. The Sensex rose 413.66 points, or 0.56%, to 74,729.27. IT, once again, did most of the work.
Educational content only. Not investment advice. Nifty and sector figures are from NSE’s daily index files and stock prices and breadth from NSE’s bhavcopy for October 16, 2026; the Sensex, company results, rupee and crude figures are from the reports linked below.
Nifty October 16: Tech Mahindra’s day
Tech Mahindra closed at ₹1,790.00 on NSE, up 8.48% from ₹1,650.00. BusinessLine reported that its Q2 FY27 net profit rose 32.74% year on year to ₹1,585.6 crore, and that it announced a 1:1 bonus issue and an interim dividend of ₹15 a share. CNBC-TV18 said it was the stock’s biggest single-day gain since March 2020.
The rest of IT came along. TCS rose 4.89% to ₹2,465.00, Infosys 4.61% to ₹1,161.20 and Wipro 5.95% to ₹184.40. CNBC-TV18 said Wipro rose after it indicated that deals deferred from the second quarter would move into the third. Nifty IT finished up 3.92% at 31,924.10.
One small but striking number: TCS closed at ₹2,076.00 on October 8, the day it reported. Eight sessions later it was at ₹2,465.00, a rise of about 18.7%. That is a big move for a stock of its size.
Outside IT, not much happened
NSE’s index file for October 16 shows how narrow the gains were:
- Nifty Bank: up 0.06% at 55,844.00, essentially flat.
- Nifty Media: up 1.92%. Nifty Metal: up 0.95%. Nifty Auto: up 0.75%.
- Down: Nifty Consumer Durables 0.61%, Nifty Oil & Gas 0.45%, Nifty FMCG 0.39%, Nifty Realty 0.33%.
- Nifty Midcap 100: down 0.11%. Nifty Smallcap 100: flat, down 0.01%.
- India VIX: 14.06, almost unchanged.
Breadth was decent anyway, with 1,581 advances and 1,071 declines among EQ-series stocks on NSE. InterGlobe Aviation was the weakest Nifty stock, down 1.91% at ₹4,686.90, with BSE down 1.90%.
The week in one line
Against the October 9 close of 22,520.45, the Nifty gained 625.70 points, or 2.78%, over the week. Nifty IT rose from 28,574.90 to 31,924.10, an 11.72% gain on NSE’s numbers. CNBC-TV18 put the IT index’s weekly rise at 11.5% and called it the biggest in nearly 18 years. We have stuck with NSE’s closing values here.
BusinessLine said the rupee firmed to around ₹94.79 a dollar on RBI intervention, while Brent stayed near $105.70 a barrel. So the two big macro worries, oil and the currency, were moving in different directions.
We think the honest summary is that this was an IT week, not a broad market week. Read it with our Sensex recap for October 15, where breadth was poor despite a big index gain.
