Big headline, narrow rally. The Sensex on October 15, 2026, rose 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to 74,315.61, while the Nifty 50 gained 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to 22,997.35. Yet on NSE, almost two stocks fell for every one that rose. This was a day for the heavyweights.

Sensex October 15: who did the lifting
India Today named Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries as the top three Sensex gainers. NSE prices tell the same story for the Nifty:
- Tech Mahindra: ₹1,650.00, up 4.75%.
- ICICI Bank: ₹1,389.40, up 3.80%.
- Reliance Industries: ₹1,215.00, up 3.44%.
- Bharti Airtel: up 3.31%. HCLTech: up 2.49%.
- HDFC Bank: ₹726.85, up 2.27%. Kotak Mahindra Bank: up 2.26%.
Put those names together and you have a large slice of the index weight. When they all rise together, the benchmarks move a lot even if the rest of the market does not.
The breadth problem
Here is the catch. Among NSE’s EQ-series stocks, only 899 closed higher against 1,755 that closed lower. NSE’s index file for October 15 shows Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.36% and Nifty Smallcap 100 down 1.31% on a day the Nifty rose 1.66%.
By sector:
- Up: Nifty Private Bank 1.89%, Nifty IT 1.82% (to 30,719.80), Nifty Financial Services 1.67%, Nifty Auto 1.67%, Nifty Oil & Gas 1.41%, Nifty Bank 0.89% (to 55,810.50).
- Down: Nifty PSU Bank 1.55%, Nifty Media 1.47%, Nifty FMCG 1.06%, Nifty Energy 0.79%.
- India VIX: down 4.10% to 14.03.
The Nifty crossed 23,000 during the day, touching 23,056.40, before settling just below it.
Nestle India: good numbers, falling stock
Nestle India was the odd one out, down 7.76% at ₹1,275.80, the worst in the Nifty. According to Mint, its September-quarter standalone net profit rose 36.3% year on year to ₹1,026.8 crore and revenue from operations grew 20.3% to ₹6,788 crore. The EBITDA margin was 23.8%, down from 24.2% in the June quarter, and the company flagged persistent food inflation and volatile commodity costs.
A day earlier the stock had been the Nifty’s best performer, rising 3.69%. So some of this was a stock that ran up into results and then met a cautious outlook. It also dragged FMCG down with it.
Crude and the mood
India Today said Brent fell 2.06% to $103.87 a barrel and that a steadier rupee and hopes of renewed foreign interest supported sentiment. It also quoted an analyst pointing to hopes of a possible rethink on equity taxation.
We would be careful reading too much into a big index day with weak breadth. Rallies that rest on a handful of large stocks can be real, but they are more fragile. Compare it with the rotation we saw in our Nifty recap for October 14, when the index fell but most stocks rose.
