After a big day, a small pullback. On Nifty October 14, 2026, the index gave back 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to close at 22,622.70. The Sensex fell 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to 72,781.89. It looked worse on the headline than it felt underneath, because more stocks rose than fell.

Educational content only. Not investment advice. Nifty and sector figures are from NSE’s daily index file and stock prices and breadth from NSE’s bhavcopy for October 14, 2026; the Sensex, crude and macro context are from the reports linked below.

Nifty October 14: a narrow range and a mixed tape

NSE’s index file for October 14 shows the Nifty opening at 22,715.75 and moving in a tight band between 22,558.95 and 22,757.95. In NSE’s equity segment, 1,519 stocks rose and 1,141 fell. That is positive breadth on a red day for the index, which usually means the selling was concentrated in a few heavy stocks.

And it was. Financials took most of the hit:

  • Shriram Finance fell 3.85% to ₹950.00, giving back a chunk of its 6% jump from the previous day.
  • HDFC Life dropped 2.85% and SBI Life 2.20%.
  • Bajaj Finance lost 2.62% to ₹957.00.
  • Nifty Financial Services fell 1.11%, and Nifty Bank slipped 0.30% to 55,316.00.

Mahindra & Mahindra (down 2.47%) and Hindalco (down 2.19%) were the other notable losers.

Where the buying went

Nifty IT added another 1.14% to 30,171.00, so the HCLTech-led rally kept going for a second day. Infosys rose 2.44% to ₹1,088.00 and Tech Mahindra 2.05%.

Consumer staples were the other bright spot. Nestle India gained 3.69% to ₹1,383.20, the best in the Nifty, and Tata Consumer Products rose 2.91%. Nifty FMCG rose 1.21%. Energy names helped too, with Nifty Energy up 1.47%, Nifty Oil & Gas up 1.04% and Coal India up 2.08%.

Pharma was the weakest sector, down 1.30%. BusinessLine linked that to uncertainty over medicine pricing after the Supreme Court questioned the scope of trade-margin controls.

Crude, inflation and the US data

BusinessLine said a sharper-than-expected rise in wholesale inflation and crude above $107 a barrel kept investors cautious ahead of US inflation data. India Today quoted Brent at around $106.37 at the time of its report and mentioned reports of two vessels struck in the Strait of Hormuz. The two figures differ a little because of timing; either way, oil stayed well above $100.

The rupee was a small comfort. BusinessLine said the dollar slipped below ₹95, helped by the RBI’s recent steps to curb speculative activity. India VIX rose 3.58% to 14.63 on NSE.

Our read

We see October 14 as a rotation day more than a reversal. Money came out of lenders and insurers that had just rallied, and went into IT, staples and energy. The index lost ground, but the average stock did fine. If you are new to reading breadth, our primer on technical analysis for Indian stocks explains why advance-decline numbers matter. And for the rally that came just before this, see our recap of Sensex and Nifty on October 13.
