Monday was a strange split screen. On Dalal Street on October 12, 2026, the rupee had one of its better days in weeks, yet the Nifty 50 fell 157.10 points, or 0.70%, to 22,363.35 and the Sensex lost 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to 71,924.68. The reason both things happened together sits in a set of RBI measures announced to defend the currency.

Dalal Street on October 12: what the RBI changed
Business Standard listed the package: a dedicated dollar window for state-owned oil companies, tighter rules on currency derivatives and a higher daily cash reserve requirement. From the fortnight beginning October 16, banks must keep at least 99% of their prescribed CRR every day, up from 90%.
The rupee liked it, strengthening nearly 1% to close at 95.78 a dollar, per the same report. Bonds did not. The 10-year government bond yield jumped 9 basis points to 7.39%, which Business Standard said was the highest since March 10, 2023. Draining cash from banks tends to push up short-term rates, and equities priced that in quickly.
How the Nifty got there
The Nifty actually opened higher at 22,593.20 and touched 22,651.10, according to NSE’s index file for October 12. It then gave up all of that and more, finishing at 22,363.35, not far above the day’s low of 22,304.45. Business Standard said the Sensex fell as much as 796.23 points during the session.
- Nifty FMCG: down 1.67%, the weakest major sector.
- Nifty PSU Bank: down 1.18%. Nifty Bank: down 0.61% at 54,918.00.
- Nifty IT: down 0.79%, giving back part of Friday’s TCS rally.
- Nifty Media: up 4.60%. Nifty Auto: up 0.90%. Nifty Realty: up 0.76%.
- Broader market: Nifty Midcap 100 was flat (up 0.08%) while Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 1.42%.
- India VIX: up 6.10% to 15.25.
Breadth was close to even. Among NSE’s EQ-series stocks, 1,315 closed higher and 1,346 closed lower. So this was a large-cap, bank-led decline, not a broad rout.
Banks carried the weight
State Bank of India fell 1.89% to ₹941.00 and ICICI Bank slipped 1.11% to ₹1,340.00. Business Standard estimated that banking stocks lost ₹30,610 crore in combined market value and accounted for 38 points of the Nifty’s fall.
Elsewhere, Apollo Hospitals was the biggest Nifty loser (down 3.15% at ₹7,775.00), followed by ITC (down 3.05%), Tech Mahindra (down 2.85%) and Larsen & Toubro (down 2.05%). On the other side, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories rose 2.71% to ₹1,229.40 and Bajaj Auto gained 2.62% to ₹10,034.00.
Flows and crude
Foreign investors kept selling. CNBC-TV18, citing provisional exchange data, said FIIs sold ₹1,708 crore of shares on the day while domestic institutions bought ₹3,045 crore. The same report said Brent had climbed to $106 a barrel, which weighed on oil-sensitive names such as IndiGo and Asian Paints.
We think October 12 is a good example of why a stronger rupee is not automatically good news for equities. How the RBI gets there matters. Tighter liquidity means higher yields, and higher yields hit bank valuations first. For the session before this one, see our recap of Sensex and Nifty on October 9.
