This was the ugly one. On Nifty October 8, 2026, the index slid 371.25 points, or 1.64%, to 22,231.80, which PTI described as a 21-month low. The Sensex lost 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%, to 71,593.24. Oil was the spark, and a day-old hawkish RBI was the fuel.

Nifty October 8: a day with almost nowhere to hide
NSE’s index file for October 8 tells the story in one line: the Nifty’s opening level of 22,599.05 was also its high for the day. From there it only went one way, touching 22,179.90 before a small bounce. PTI noted that intraday low was also a fresh 52-week low.
The breadth was brutal. Of the stocks that traded in NSE’s main equity series, just 281 closed higher and 2,381 closed lower. Inside the Nifty 50, only three names finished in the green.
Sectors: commodities and rate-sensitives led the fall
- Nifty Metal: down 3.55%, the worst of the major sector indices.
- Nifty Realty: down 3.16%.
- Nifty Energy: down 2.82%; Nifty Oil & Gas fell 2.52%.
- Nifty Auto: down 2.49%. Nifty Pharma: down 2.32%. Nifty FMCG: down 2.02%.
- Nifty Bank: down 0.98% at 54,515.05.
- Nifty IT: nearly flat, down just 0.08%. That small detail matters for what came next.
- Broader market: Nifty Midcap 100 fell 2.53% and Nifty Smallcap 100 lost 2.34%.
- India VIX: jumped 10.01% to 15.28.
Who fell, and the three that didn’t
Adani Enterprises was the heaviest Nifty loser, down 5.36% at ₹2,596.00. JSW Steel dropped 4.46% to ₹1,175.20 and ITC fell 4.03% to ₹255.00, and with that it had given back all of the Citi-upgrade jump from Monday, when it closed at ₹268.90. Max Healthcare (down 3.81%), InterGlobe Aviation (down 3.55% at ₹4,813.10) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (down 3.53%) completed the bottom six.
An airline falling hard on an oil spike needs no explaining. Fuel is one of the biggest costs for airlines, so they tend to feel an oil spike before most other sectors.
The only Nifty gainers were Infosys (up 0.50% at ₹997.00), Tech Mahindra (up 0.34%) and Axis Bank (up 0.20%). Two IT exporters holding up while everything else sold off was a quiet hint. A weak rupee helps their dollar earnings, and results season was about to start.
Oil, flows and the bill for the day
According to PTI’s closing report, Brent crude jumped 4.25% to $104.5 a barrel, and foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹6,121.37 crore on the previous day. PTI also said the Sensex’s close was its lowest in more than two and a half years. A second PTI report put the one-day drop in the market value of BSE-listed companies at ₹10,01,898.68 crore, and said the Nifty was down 14.91% for the year so far.
We would not read too much into one session’s panic, but the setup was clear: oil above $100, an RBI that had just ruled out cuts, and steady foreign selling. Our recap of Sensex and Nifty on October 7 covers the policy decision that set the tone. When VIX jumps 10% in a day, option premiums swell too; our options trading guide for beginners explains why.
