The stock market closing October 16 picture was simple enough: Indian benchmarks rose for a second straight day, and IT stocks did nearly all the work. The Nifty 50 gained 148.80 points, or 0.65%, to finish at 23,146.15. The Sensex added 413.66 points, or 0.56%, to 74,729.27. The Nifty IT index shot up 3.92%, while midcap and smallcap indices quietly slipped. For the running market picture, see our Stock Market Today India hub.

IT stocks did the heavy lifting
NSE’s closing prices in the daily bhavcopy tell the story. The top three Nifty 50 gainers were all IT names. Tech Mahindra rose 8.48% to ₹1,790.00, TCS gained 4.89% to ₹2,465.00 and Infosys climbed 4.61% to ₹1,161.20. Outside the index, Wipro added 5.95% to ₹184.40. Only one stock in the Nifty IT basket fell, Persistent Systems, down 1.70%.
Tech Mahindra’s Q2 FY27 results, out on October 15, showed consolidated profit after tax up 32.7% year-on-year at ₹1,586 crore, revenue up 15.6% at ₹16,180 crore and EBIT up 40.5% at ₹2,387 crore. The board declared an interim dividend of ₹15 per share and recommended a 1:1 bonus issue, which still needs shareholder approval. We went through the numbers in our Tech Mahindra Q2 results post.
Under the surface, the day was far more even. The bhavcopy shows 26 Nifty 50 stocks closing higher and 24 lower. The worst performers were InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), down 1.91%, BSE (down 1.90%), Max Healthcare (down 1.40%), Tata Consumer Products (down 1.27%), Jio Financial Services (down 1.26%) and ONGC (down 1.18%). BusinessLine said advances beat declines by 1.44 to 1 across the market and described the rally as “far from broad-based”.
A second weekly gain for the Nifty
Compare NSE’s closing files for October 9 and October 16 and the Nifty 50 is up 625.70 points, or 2.78%, for the week, from 22,520.45. The Nifty IT index gained 11.72% over the same stretch, from 28,574.90, while Nifty Bank managed 1.06%. BusinessLine put the Sensex’s weekly gain at about 2,250 points and linked the IT rally to a global shift of money out of AI-linked stocks and into traditional software companies.
Levels and events we’re watching
This recovery leans on a handful of large IT stocks while midcaps, smallcaps, FMCG and pharma drag their feet. In Business Standard’s report, Vatsal Bhuva of LKP Securities put immediate support for the Nifty at 22,800 and resistance at 23,200, and said holding above 23,000 matters. If it does hold, he sees room for a move towards the 50-day moving average in the 23,500 to 23,600 zone. That’s one analyst’s view, not a forecast.
Two events could put the rally to the test. BusinessLine reported that HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank were due to declare results on Saturday, October 17, which should set the mood for financials. Then comes the Jio Platforms IPO, open from October 21 to October 23. It is an entirely fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares at ₹1,065 to ₹1,119, raising ₹30,213 crore at the top of the band. Business Standard notes that, if fully subscribed, it would top Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,800 crore IPO. Details are in our Jio Platforms IPO price band guide.
